Yup, never sang the national anthem in my highschool either, just the pledge of allegiance.
But anyways, I believe what he was saying was how embarassing it would be to forget the national anthem. I've seen him forget verses at times in concerts to his songs, imagine doing that with one of the most sacred songs in the country...pretty intimidating.
Speaking of screwing up the National Anthem:

P.S. I also thought we were invisible with liberty and justice for all up until about 4th grade.
