I've got to ask those more knowledgable than me...thats ALL of you then...

So many live performers these days where an earpiece when gigging and I'm more than a little curious..

are they 'hands free' with their mobile phones, expecting a call mid song?? or is it something as simple as a metronome click to keep time?? or is it something else?? 8)

what did the drummer get on his I.Q. test?....

They are listening to a standard monitor mix, broadcast to a beltpack, and plugged into their ear.

advantage: don't need monitor wedges cluttering up the stage, don't need power amps for the wedges, you don't move out of the "sweet spot" when you move around the stage, less feedback...

Kent's got it; wireless in-ear monitors.

An alternative is to get some big cans like Paul Gilbert wears:

That replaces the "Feedback Speaker" right?

Yup.
But foldback is probably the term you're looking for.

Although, they can cause a fair bit of feedback if not set up properly.

Thanks! I did not know that - monitor speaker is probably a better term.
