My list has to include Art Blakey, Chick Webb, and Buddy Rich. I'm not sure who else I'd toss in there.
From a rock perspective I think of Bill Bruford, Danny Carey, Mike Portnoy, Ginger Baker, maybe the guy from Steeley Dan .. can't recall his name ...

At this time I would like to tell you that NO MATTER WHAT...IT IS WITH GOD. HE IS GRACIOUS AND MERCIFUL. HIS WAY IS IN LOVE, THROUGH WHICH WE ALL ARE. IT IS TRULY -- A LOVE SUPREME --. John Coltrane
Thanks, Dan.

i'm a huge Dave Grohl fan. huge. wonderful drummer. his work on Queens of the Stone Age's "Songs for the Deaf" is just wonderful.
and i cant not mention U2's Larry Mullen Jr.
Ginger Baker definitly. Such a great improvisational drummer, even at his age now, what is he, 70 maybe, he still managed that 10 minute solo in Toad. Great jazz/blues drummer. I think many professionals consider him one of the greatest of all time.
Keith Moon is another of my favourites.
Pretty cool Bish. 8)

Ditto on Rich, Mooney, Watts, Bozzio and Dunbar
Also: Steward Copeland and Billy Martin (Medeski, Martin & Wood)

Ginger Baker and Moonie have to be up there.
My current favourite, though, is called John - and the pizza's always hot, when he delivers it.
I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
