There are sooooo many wonderful, powerful songs through the years in this genre. Songs that move people, advance ideas and start a dialogue. Below are a few of my favorite political/social commentary songs that I could think of off the top of my head. I know I've probably missed many, many more....help me out and give us your favorites. In no particular order:
Masters of War - Dylan
Get Up, Stand Up - Bob Marley
Buffalo Soldier - Bob Marley
Driven to Tears - The Police
Like a Song - U2
Glorified G - Pearl Jam
Do the Evolution - Pearl Jam
Almost Cut My Hair - CSNY
Rockin' In the Free World - Neil Young
Southern Man - Neil Young
Dogs - Pink Floyd (really, the entire "Animals" album)
Holiday - Green Day (again, really that entire elbum)
Minority - Green Day
Gather Round the Stone - Ben Harper
Oppression - Ben Harper
Revolution - Beatles
Well, I'm kinda looking for one, but I don't know the name or artist. It was in the Dylan era, around the same time of Blowing in the Wind IIRC. The dude scored a hit with it but faded away pretty much afterwards. The song was bleak and sounded somewhat 'desperate'. Would appreciate if anyone knows what I'm rambling about.
'Alice's Restaurant' - Arlo Guthrie
My favorite song on political/social commentary! :D
EDIT: And, then there's "Fixin' To Die Rag' by Country Joe and the Fish
Yes, I AM a child of the 60's and 70's!!! :D

Do any remnants of lyrics come to your mind? That might help to figure it out! :D
EDIT: Could it possibly be "Eve of Destruction", originally by Barry McGuire but covered by Dylan?

Eve of Destruction - Barry McGuire Hands down the Best.
Arjen - You have good taste
Elecktrablue - That's some great ESP
Motorcycle Emptiness - Manic Street Preachers (or just about anything of theirs actually, but that's my favourite)

We did Eve of Destruction in a High School Musical one year, it was a good song for a protest scene, turned out well and was fun to play.
