Well I can tell you why I wanted a Tele - I saw Quo for the umpteenth time and decided I had to have one! I know this tale's getting old now, so I'll cut it short - I preferred the Squier Tele to the Fenders I tried. It felt and sounded better.

Why you should get a Tele? Well - that's for you to decide. I like 'em because they're so versatile.....you can play rock, hard rock, blues, country, hell, just about anything with a Tele. And if they're good enough for Quo, and Keef, then they're good enough for me!

Ken - yeah, Quo have always stuck to the teles, apart from occasional songs - although Frank has an extra pick-up in his so it's like a Strat configuration, and Rick uses a Bada$$ bridge on his - he uses heavy strings (13's!) and really attacks the strings. (Frank Rossi plays mostly lead, his is the green tele - Rick Parfitt uses the white teles, plays mostly rhythm.)

Here's a clip of Quo playing "Fun Fun Fun" - with the Beach Boys! - from around '96. Funny, but I haven't a clue what guitar Rick's using in this one!

I hated Teles when I first started playing -- both because of look and feel in hand. I feel completely the opposite these days. They are just so quintessentially the electric guitar. There is nothing I don't need on it, and the fatter the neck, the better.

Notes on using Teles:

Wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Telecaster_players

And the Tele paradox: Players who use humbuckers live, often use Teles in the studio because Teles record with so much more character. Also have heard that some inveterate Tele players (e.g., Lindsey Buckingham once) switched from Tele to 'buckers live, because it is much easier to cut through the mix of a heavier sounding band with 'buckers. Have to agree with this. While I much prefer to play Fender-types, having a humbucker makes live playing of leads so much easier. I think this is one reason the Squire '51 is such a nice live player. The bridge 'bucker helps cut through the mix -- though the sound ... well just ain't the same as that Tele bridge now is it? I'm thinking a Tele with a P90 neck pup might just be the ticket for live playing in 'denser' bands. Maybe that newer Aerodyne ...

Hi,

I've never owned or even played a Tele. But I've always liked the way they looked - completely agricultural, like they came out of a Russian tractor factory. Something very appealing about that, although I've no idea why. :)

I expect I'll eventually get sucked in, but the Teles and copies I've seen in shops have all looked too slick, and just not quite rustic enough.

They should look more like this one:

It's got that nice 'lived-in' rural look about it... Like you could use it for hammering in fence posts during the day and then play it when the sun went down.. 8)

Cheers,

Chris

Why own a tele? Well, for starters there is a fairly impressive list of players who use them
Albert Collins
Keith Richards
James Burton
Muddy Waters
Syd Barrett
Steve Cropper
Jeff Beck
Luther Perkins
Waylon Jennings
John5

Pretty good endorsement for a product eh?

There is nothing fancy about it, just a big thick chunk of wood with pick ups and strings. No nonsense, no frills down and dirty guitar built for playing.
Couple of different configurations available to suit your needs, either straight up SC's or bucker in the neck and SC at the bridge to give you that Keef growl.
It's a guitar for people who want to impress with their skill not with their equipment

Immature? Of course I'm immature Einstein, I'm 50 and in a Rock and ROll band.

Thanks Tele and Vic

mmm well if its for someone to impress with their playing mmm I can't see me owning one for a loooooooooooooooong time yet ..

I am not being a smarty here I just honestly did not know why so many forum users swear by them , I don't honestly care who owns one coz I 'll probably never be able to play like them . I don't buy vehicles because of who owns one .. Same thing for me when I buy anything , so I guess its like everything its a personal choice , but I do like the fact there is more than one style .

Thank you guys for being so honest about your guitars and not jump down my neck ..

Cheers
Enjoy the Teles guys

I like mine because it is so simple yet so versatile. As a beginner, I really didn't want an electric guitar with a gazillion knobs and buttons and whammy bars on it to worry about. I just wanted something I could play and I was willing to put down the money to buy something I knew would be top quality and last a long time because often you get what you pay for. Simple as it is, hook it up to my not so fancy little Fender amp and you can make all kinds of different sounds come out of it and the size and weight and feel of it works well for me.

All my life I wanted to be somebody. Now I see I should have been more specific.

I love telecasters too.

Just a bit of info - The Stairway to Heaven solo was done with a Tele. Surprising, isn't it ? But true.

I didn't know that.

However I do know that the one I sold was sweet and when the funds are there, I fully intend to buy another one.
