Ok people... I have never heard Paul Gilbert... until tonight. I was just cruising around the net and decided to hit YouTube. i was checking out some Eric Johnson and somehow a Gilbert video showed up in the right panel. I'd heard of him but never HEARD him play. Gave it a shot. Wow!

All of my favorite instructional YouTube videos are by Paul Gilbert. He was with Racer X and is insane (as a guitarist)!!! I love him, and he seems very down-to-earth and patient with his lessons. His actual performances, however, (e.g., the drill  ) are something entirely different... Ya gotta check him out! :D

I've seen that video many times, its cool. I know its a cheesy song but I love Mr. Big's - To Be With You. That solo is so fun to play.
My dad would always talk about retirement, and allude to the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. And I say all you've got at the end of the rainbow is death. You're riding the rainbow right now. - Mark Borchardt
He's very much a favourite over at Total Guitar magazine, and a lot of his video lessons for them are now available for no cost at www.musicradar.com

Usually this type of players is not commented here, perhaps we tend to more "classic" rock, but they have a perfect technique. To me Gilbert is one of the four or six better "new" guitar players currently.
I was a big fan of Racer X back in the 80's. I about wore out their Live Extreme Vol 1 cassette. Also had Street Lethal, which was a great album. They got bonus points because their lead singer's name was Jeff Martin.
Pretty cool, the guy can play! OK, he's shredding - not my favourite normal listening. But there's plenty of melody there to keep your interest, and yes, the bass player's pretty good too!
One of the few links I've folowed that makes me want to find out more about the linked guitarist. I'll check out some more of PG's playing on youtube.
Thanks, Dali!

I picked up his Get Out of My Yard CD. Great stuff. Didn't he tour with Joe Satch on the G3 last year or so??
He's phenomenal!!
Teamwork- A few harmless flakes working together can unleash an avalanche of destruction.
Gilbert is a monster. He also gave Buckethead some lessons, which led some people to believe buckethead was actually Gilbert. The "floating" right hand technique, while not exclusive to Gilbert, is kind of his signature. The guy's a machine.
My favorite Paul Gilbert video lesson:

My girls like Boku No Atama - they ask for "the tomato song"

And for those who might wonder why he wears those funky cans on his ears:
"Everybody got to elevate from the norm."
Paul is so good technically it's ridiculous...and he does have more musicality than many of the 'shred' crowd out there.
I watched a few more videos, and he seems like a coot dude. Just having fun out there. And how many guys with that kind of crazy talent will sit around and create home videos for people to enjoy?
