Generally speaking, human beings can get used to almost anything...so I don't think rap would be effective in the long haul. Prisoners would come to like it; and would miss it when it was gone.

It's a little-known fact that silence would be a more effective tool of (emotional) torture--cause, hey people, that's what were talking about here--emotional, not physical torture. Think of the silent treatment you get at home when you mess up. Any word of reconciliation is a welcomed relief! Maybe (on a societal level) it is that silence, the pain of being ignored, that compels these poor, neglected souls to express themselves in the genre we know as Rap.

But then, if Silence were used as a means of emotional torture; would not the tables be turned?; would the tormentors not become the tormented. as prisoners were forced out of their emotional vacuity to communicate with each other via that rhythmic verbiage?

I guess I must disagree with our own Ghost Rider...

Does Ghost Rider have other aliases on GN or has he started to talk about himself in the 3rd person?
Anyway, "silence" has been used for torture, or rather white noise, which is a close equivalent to silence. It is in regular use by many militaries and "secret" organisations, like the CIA. It goes under the heading of sensory deprivation. It is, however, only the tortured that suffer the "silence", the torturers live outside of that environment.
The chances are, that anyone having to listen to noise, that gets on their nerves, for any length of time, will go bananas before getting to like the sounds he's hearing. I read a report some time ago, that suggested that, instead of listening to happy music, to cure sadness, you should, first, start listening to sad music and, then, slowly move to happier music on the basis that the music will take your mood with it. On that basis, unless the tortured are in the mood for rap, it's likely to grate on their nerves very quickly - and it will only get worse (not better) as time goes on.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

WASHINGTON, DC-PENTAGON
Confirmed by a secretly leaked memo and anonymous source, the CIA has ceased use of incessant rap music as torture. An alternative method, forcing the detainees to read a post on www.guitarnoise.com, is being used in its place.

"Effective beyond our wildest dreams. The insurgency should be crushed tomorrow." according to one CIA handler known only as Smokindog. "Usually the detainees give us what we want to know after only 3 pages. Heck, we've got 10 more we can use after that."

"Oddly, now that it's gone I kinda miss it" said another CIA handler known only as Nils, "I mean I don't like rap."

Nice find Nick.

And I was hoping the CIA would not leak the fact that "I don't like rap". Just didn't want that out yet.

I'm thinking maybe the military might be my only chance to play and get payed,I'm pretty sure a couple of hours listening to me they'd pretty much tell the military anything they wanted to hear !!
