Boston - More than A Feeling.....beautifully melodic playing
CCR...Heard it Thru The Grapevine.....just lifts you up and carries you away, makes you want to learn to play guitar...
Anything by the Edge...
Anything by Manny Charlton....

no love for david gilmour? also it's good and it fits perfectly but I am not sure why stairway to heaven solo is soooo highly regarded. Genuine question if anyone cares to explain. maggot brain by eddie hazel. the whole song is one big solo. really emotional
I'm not to sure on that Stairway to Heaven deal. I don't think its that great of a solo, but maybe its becausae Page was one of the pioneers of guitar in a way, many of the licks in that solo are constantaly being reproduced in other solos.
Stairway had a great solo, but the solo is actually, in my opinion, the weakest part of stairway (not that stairway has any weak parts) simply because Jimmy Page is a major candidate for best soloist ever, and its really an average solo compared to a lot of his other work.
"You know, it eez possible to be too attractive." - Pepe le Pew
"Be excellent to each other, and party on dudes." - Bill and Ted
IMO, Communication Breakdown (as cited by s-dog, above) is a better example of Page at his studio best -- Stairway's solo seems, well ... too safe.
-=tension & release=-
Er...
P.S.
Antny, only one person said it was one of their favorite solos.
that's my point. I know it's a very good solo and it compliments the song nicely but I don't here anything that jumps out so much like say bold as love, comfortably numb, hotel california, etc. still just wonderin.
malaka  I know only one person here listed it but it is consitently rated in the top three of alltime by media publications
eddie hazel while not technicaly outstanding is way underrated. Interesting sidenote. I was listening to I could have lied from the blood sugar sex magik cd and thought Frusciante definitely had Eddie Hazel on the brain when he wrote that one. The tone phrasing and vibe are all eddie Hazel. That might be an interesting thread by the way, trying to cite influences in songs or artists. I for one hear Hendrix, Hayzel, lou reed, jimmy nolan, eric avery (janes addiction bass player) and even new order in the guitar playing of Frusciante. I know he cites them as well as some others but before I could not really understand that whereas now I really hear it plain as day. Good example of taking from the past and making your own style.
just to tie the prior post to this thread I did mean the solo from I could have lied.
Steve Vai - For the Love of God
to name a few new one, too:
"Audioslave - Like A Stone" (maybe not the weirdest solo on the CD but very well recorded and 100% fitting and I like the song most atm)
"Velvet Revolver - You Got No Right"
and thousand other solos I can't think of right now because I am tired...
NO MORE THEORY!!
