Got something new to go with the Johnson yesterday. A huge hand blown custom Diamond Ultimate slide made of two layers of leaded crystal, purple on the inside with a clear coating on the outside, with a closed "bullet" dome. Bought it from a Net friend in New Mexico. I'm having fun playing with it. Fits my pinky perfectly, and it's got enough mass to get into the kind of heavy playing previously reserved for slides like my Craftsman socket and Bigheart Bronze Bomber.
Here it is in its natural habitat:

Dang that slides bigger....bigger than....than..

Ric, don't you find that with a closed-off slide like that, you tend to get a build up of condensation inside the slide that softens your callouse? Or does that only happen if it's fairly tight fitting?
:D :D :D

It does build up condensation. (And is tight fitting.) Dunno if that'll be a problem. I've not had a closed end slide like this before, I don't think... Coricidin bottles and the like won't go on my fingers. Come to think of it I do have a Hoppe's #9 bottle I've slid with a bit, and a 20mm cannon shell. (Empty case.) Haven't used them a lot, though. Really all of the slides I have are metal or glass and get wet inside if my hands are sweating. I don't think this'll be more problematic. Plenty of other players have successfully used domed or closed slides including the aforementioned Coricidin bottles.
I suppose I should note that's not my Johnson in the photo, but my Washburn.

Out in the backyard with your Johnson...
Yeah, I like to get it out on warm, sunny days.

How deep was the water?

I know this is off the topic, but it looks like your action is pretty low for slide playing(at least for me). What guage and hieght do you use for acoustic and electric? I'm trying to find a hsppy medium between high enough to play slide without knocking the frets, but low enough to play regular chords and notes. Haven't had much luck yet
12s, about 1/8"-5/32" high at the 12th fret.
Slide knocking on the fretboard's as normal a part of the playing sound as finger squeaks in fretted acoustic playing. It doesn't bother me if it's not way excessive and it's in time with the music. But it goes way down as you learn to stop the slide in proper position on the string(s) by "muscle memory" instead of relying on string tension to do the job. As I've often said, my guitar teacher would grab new guitars off the store racks and play with me. Low actions, light strings, tuned down to Open D or G, and he just played beautifully!

Thanks. I guess you just answered this question on my other post also. :D
Didn't get the string height in over there, though. :D
