Just got a new Artisan lap steel from MF. It was sitting by my door when i got home from work this morning. It blue and the finish is nice. sounds good but needs thicker strings i think.A real bargin for $60 U.S. I tuned it to open G and played some "in my time of dying" and cranked up the amp. sounds pretty cool!
then i tuned it to a modified C6 tuning ( a lot higher tuning than a regular guitar neck could handle) some pretty cool sounds!! a real Nashville high!I can see geting another one or a double lap steel 8) 8) I have to admit, i always have loved that nashville steel guitar sound!! I just might build a double steel! I do have some basic wood working skills after all. Any way, I think I'm hooked  --the dog

Nice!!!! Sounds like you're building up a formidable arsenal of WMD there...

errr...I may have been thinking along the wrong lines all his time...is a "lap steel" just a guitar specifically designed for playing slide holding the guitar on your lap facing upwards? Sort of like a portable pedal steel? Or is it something else entirely?

Pics...or links to pics...would help...

:D :D :D

You've got it, Vic!

Here's MusiciansFriend's link to the Artisan:

I sure do enjoy mine! It does need heavier strings. I've got Martin Bluegrass Resonator strings on mine. (They're nickel wound and work fine with electric pickups.) The gauges are .016-.056". I've had them tuned to Open E on this short scale instrument, but right now it's in Open G and sounds great. The treble strings were pretty tight in E, and I actually like the feel better when they're not quite so tight.

Could I ask the exact price incl shipping? They don't seem to want to ship to Canada. I may have to beg a big favour from someone.

You will need to get a Guitar cable with a flat angle plug at one end due to the placement of the jack ( its right where the hand rest should be) The nice thing about geting this from MF is NO SALES TAX .
My wife just walked in to my music room and started counting my guitars, ( 8 and counting) and just shook her head , I didn't have the heart to tell her about the double steel i plan to build    -the dog ( from the dog house)

Yeah, it's playable with a straight ended cable, but one with a right angle plug makes a big difference. The jack's right where a right handed player wants to rest the heel of his/her hand.

You got the blue one. Cool! Mine's the metalflake red. Really looks like copper. Just like my father-in-law's old Ranger bass boat.

I've always thought it a good idea when you want something like a guitar, amp, rifle, whatever, to start looking at boat catalogs. Then when you say, "Naw, I think I just want a new guitar instead," your lovely spouse will quickly agree.

I play in open G, D, C6/A7mainly.

Hmm....you have got me wanting one of these lap steels now....but after what I've spent on guitars and amps since February, I think I'd better sneak one into the house.....else it'll be me who's in the doghouse...
