Well, to a certain extent you get what you pay for... but if you compare one of these to a $600-700 instrument I doubt you could hear much difference. The bodies are reasonably vibrant, and the bridge ( http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Bridges,_tailpieces/Resonator_nuts,_saddles/Maple_Biscuit-Bridge.html )
can be replaced for an upgrade easily and inexpensively. Most of the time with these the heavier strings will get more tone, so you might want to consider a slightly heavier gauge string set. The tone is going to be a little clangy, as it should be with a metal body.
I purchased a Rogue metal body...very similar to this Johnson thats on sale. Many people say the Johnson is a better reso. Here is a clip of my Rogue:
