I just got around to putting these new recordings up on soundclick. I think you can still hunt down the original "Doorbell" thread but "Smoke & Mirrors" was lost in the great move a long while back. It was the third song I ever wrote for SSG.

"Doorbell"
She's got her hands to her face
And her slender fingers trace
All the lines that tell the stories
That makeup wont erase
She's got her share of regrets
And scars lest she forget
But looking back
There's not one that wasn't worth it
And she closes her eyes and smiles
Hums a tune from far before your time
And somewhere in her mind
She's floatin' 'cross some half forgotten dance floor
Just a couple blocks away
In a quaint little cafe
Sits a southern gentleman
With a lily bouquet
Kinda quiet and shy
And slightly troubled by
A mothballed suit
And a stomach full of butterflies
And he closes his eyes and smiles
Hasn't felt like this for a long time
And somewhere in his mind
They're floatin' 'cross some half forgotten dance floor
And as he walks down the block
She looks at the clock
And he wonders what he's shaking for
She says "at your age well...
When fate rings the bell
You best not open the door"
Then as if on cue the chimes sound
And two hearts pound
As she lets him in
And so it begins...

"Smoke & Mirrors"
Well there's a neon light that's burning bright
But it barely cuts the haze
There's a juke box and a bartender
That have both seen better days
There's a tap that pours salvation out
And some friends to cheer me up
And a little bag tucked in my coat
In case that aint enough
And its all just smoke and mirrors
Just a trick in our own minds
When we raise our glasses up
And give a toast to these good times
Its all just smoke and mirrors
Little lies we tell ourselves
Cause truth be told if times were good
We'd all be somewhere else
And there's a junky in the parking lot
And he wants me to believe
He's got nothing in his pockets
And nothing hidden up his sleeves
There's a preacher on the TV screen
Saying heaven can be mine
But he's got the same look in his eyes
As the man that waits outside
But its all just smoke and mirrors
Just a trick in our own minds
When we raise our glasses up
And give a toast to these good times
Its all just smoke and mirrors
Little lies we tell ourselves
Cause truth be told if times were good
We'd all be somewhere else
And we've all got our delusions
And the masks we hide behind
So here's to you
And to whatever gets you through the night
Cause its all just smoke and mirrors
Just a trick in our own minds
When we raise our glasses up
And give a toast to these good times
Its all just smoke and mirrors
Little lies we tell ourselves
Cause truth be told if times were good
We'd all be somewhere else
Truth be told if times were good
We'd all be somewhere else.

Hey Marv!! I haven't seen you for awhile (Am I blind?) I've always thought Smoke and Mirrors is awesome. I still playlist it on my Mp3 player.

This is a new recording of it... you might want to check it out.

First thing that struck me was how professional the recordings sound - second thing was how the kind of sparse instrumentation works well with the lyrics....
Your voice seems to have gotten a little deeper over the last couple of years, and you seem to be singing with more conviction than previously - putting more into it is what I mean...
Couple of VERY good songs here, I think you've got a pair of Aces....
:D :D :D

Hey Marv
these are outstanding, I love Doorbell. Question for you: what effect do you use to produce that beautiful muted but full, guitar sound. I understand how you've used the slight delay to get the panned effect but that tone, man that is just great.
Paul
Paul,
There's actually no delay effect present. you close mic the guitar and then put an omni-directional mic across the room from it. The guitar gets a lot of "air" in it and the sound gets that full quality to it. Do two passes and pan one to each side and you have the sound featured in this recording.
