This one is short and translates better when played rather than read.. but the band hasn't recorded it yet.. so.. Oh well. Its got a really bluesy feel.

"Cross On A Chain"

I got a cross on a chain and rifle in my hands
And I'm headed down to where the ocean meets the land
And if I die today let me die like a man
With a cross on a chain and a rifle in my hands

I got a cross on a chain and your picture in my mind
Just the way you looked on the night we said goodbye
With those tears streamin out of your pretty blue eyes
I got a cross on a chain and your picture in my mind

I got a cross on a chain and it just wont let me be
There's a ghost that comes callin when I lay down to sleep
And that boy I killed looked a lot like me
I got a cross on a chain and it just wont let me be

I got a cross on a chain and a chill down in my bones
I know Jesus wont forgive me for all the things i've done
So if I can't see heaven let me please see home
I got a cross on a chain and chill down in my bones

Hey Marv,

nice piece of writing. On the first read I got the image of the lonely soldier, then on the second read I got a more macbre image of an angry jilted lover, then on the third read it was the soldier again with his moral doubts. Not a bad emotional result from one song I wouldnt have thought, well done.

cheers
Paul

Good writing Marv.

the lines
I got a cross on a chain and rifle in my hands
And I'm headed down to where the ocean meets the land

straight away gave me the image of the sharpshooter from the introduction to Saving Private Ryan (the guy always pulls out his St.Christopher and kisses it before he shoots someone with his rifle)

and the lines
There's a ghost that comes callin when I lay down to sleep
And that boy I killed looked a lot like me

again brought me back to the film, the scene where one soldier crys after killing one of the Youth soldiers 'cos they all are men in the end.

Good imagery in my head results from good writing on your end.

So well done!

Great lyrics! No suggestions -- it's tight, IMO.

Hope you'll post it once it's recorded.

Great job, great imagery, great message. I liked this one a lot. Can't wait to hear the MP3.

Funny that Pete mentions Private Ryan - I got a vivid mental image from a film too, but a different one - Apt Pupil. Where the young kid goes berserk at the end and takes the rifle out....it was the last verse I got that from, previously I'd been thinking of the narrator as a sniper/soldier - last verse makes him seem more like a random serial killer. Bearing in mind there's usually a subtle dark side to your writing, I was wondering if that was the twist?

Very vivid imagery - should work great as a slow blues.

:D :D :D
