This is actually a "closer to finished" version of what I was working on for the topic a few weeks back (relationships a la Fathers And Daughters). It still needs to go through the wringer and it's one of the few pieces I've written (or sort of written since I don't think it's anywhere near done yet) without starting on the music. Meaning that there are going to all sorts of meter glitches...
If it matters, it's kind of sitting in my mind right now as a fingerstyle folky piece. Big surprise there! Probably could use a bridge (no pun intended) (really) as well as a trim...
Have I made enough excuses for myself yet?
Oh - with Mini-Camp coming up I might not get the chance to critique as much as I'd like but I will get back into doing at least that whether I manage to make an assignment or not.
Ashes In The River
I could blame it on your mother
I could blame it on the song
I got Georgia on my mind
Got my things and I was gone
Didn't always do the smart thing
Though I meant no harm or wrong
Don't set fire to no bridges
That you're still standing on
Before the river's full of ashes
Before the smoke's done blown away
Make sure the side you're standing on
Is where you want to stay
Ain't it funny you can miss somebody
Every single day
But before you finish dialing
You run out of things to say
Didn't always do the right thing
Though I meant no harm or wrong
Don't set fire to no bridges
That you're still standing on
Before the river's full of ashes
Before the smoke's done blown away
Make sure the side you're standing on
Is where you want to stay
Only photos in my home now
Are the pictures in my head
Did you ever get the pretty things
I always meant to send
Didn't always do the smart thing
Though I meant no harm or wrong
Don't set fire to no bridges
That you're still standing on
Before the river's full of ashes
Before the smoke's done blown away
Make sure the side you're standing on
Is where you want to stay

Hi David
I love this :
Don't set fire to no bridges
That you're still standing on
Along with :
Make sure the side you're standing on
Is where you want to stay
To me those 4 little lines gives a real homey ( is that a word ) feel to it , like dad giving advise to his grown up children ..
Nice writting Sir
Yeah you made enough excuses but none were convincing
Hilch :?:
Here is to you as good as you are
And here is to me as bad as I am
As good as you are and as bad as I am
I'm as good as you are as bad as I am
David,
Very nice piece! I'm also a fan of the lines Hilch
mentioned. As he said "homey" and down to earth.
If I may make a couple small suggestions.
I got Georgia on my mind
How about:
With Georgia on my mind
It retains the reference to the classic with out being
a direct quote.
And for some reason I'm thinking the second verse
may work better as the third. Just a thought.
Take Care
John
PS I'm planning on being in the audience for the
"mini camp open mic" unless something changes
I'll see you then.
