whew...

Was going absolutely nowhere with this until I reread Jane's Week 13 piece - Millie's Magic Mantra of Love (dot.com) - and, lo and behold the carnival barker in me just came to life. Still needs tweaking, which is why we're here...

I've got the music, in terms of melody and chords, in my head, but I still flit between doing it as a southern rocker (think Gimme Three Steps), folkie twelve-stringer (anything by the Byrds) or more punky, like the Clash. Maybe if I manage to find some time I can try out the different arrangements and see who likes what.

Theology 101
- D. Hodge

My friend do you have problems
You can't handle by yourself
Well then step inside and look around
Take an icon from our shelves
You can lock it up or take it home
To sing to or to pray
Which god will you be worshipping today?

We could fit you with a loving god
Who'll reward good deeds you do
How about a god more wrathful
So you can kill those not like you
Perhaps a nice earth mother goddess
Who will ease your cares away
Which god will you be worshipping today?

We've got gods for all occasions
For whatever mood you're in
He'll roast the deviants in hell
And still forgive your every sin
He'll rain down fire and flood and famine
And bless your children while they play
Which god will you be worshipping today?

©2008 D. Hodge

I keep thinking I need a bridge. Maybe something about refunds or trading up (upgrading?) as your needs or situation warrant...

Peace

I had a bit of the same thought this week but it didn't go anywhere. Remember the old dog food commercial?" My gods better than your god, my god's better than yours......

I like the idea here . Maybe for a bridge you can work in something along the lines of Johnny Cash's "I've been everywhere" and just start rattling off a list:

We've got Egyptian, Roman, Bahai and Hebrew, Christian , Hindu, something old, or something new....

Falling in love is like learning to play the guitar; first you learn to follow the rules, then you learn to play with your heart.

i like katherine's idea for the bridge!! in my song i was going to think of the mantra to be chanted a number of times.

for little tweaks in this song, i think:
line 1 - a problem, instead of problems
line 3 - the shelf instead of shelves
line 7 - will you worship today
line 11 - to kill those

Hi David,

Nice job! I think Kathy is on the right track with her idea for a bridge
and you could still work you thoughts about upgrading into it.

The first verse would work well as a spoken word in a half Televangelist
and half Carnival Barker voice.

Oh, I like this! Just the sort of thing to appeal to my wicked sense of humour....

To be honest, I can't see much that needs tweaking - except that it'd give the last line of each verse more impact if you didn't use the actual word "God(s)" in the verses - maybe spirit(s), deities, etc?

Funny Kath should mention Johnny Cash - I had a kind of Johnny Cash rhythm going through my head as I read it....

:D :D :D

LOL
Wow, no ambiguity in those lyrics
The carnival barker imagery right from the start.

Just a thought:

From
And bless your children while they play
to
After His angel leads you away

Very funny, David.
Instead of trombones, idols.
After all, U R the Music Man! :D

It's the rock that gives the stream its music . . . and the stream that gives the rock its roll.
