This song is very dependant on the musical composition. The lyrics are minimalist as is the guitar part. What I have in my head is a kind of a slow marching beat provided by the bass and drum. The nonsense phrases are used here to mark the passage of time.

Lines
© 2008 Copyright Paul Brady

March in time
Know your place in the line
Your last in place
One of three keeping pace

And one moves on
And one moves in
Another's gone and a
Another one begins

hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm, hmm hmm hmm

March in time
Generations on both sides
Look ahead see behind
Two of three walking blind

And one moves on
And one moves in
Another's gone and a
Another one begins

hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm, hmm hmm hmm

March in time
Expressive lines are never kind
Things held dear
Three of three where to from here

And one moves on
And one moves in
Another's gone and a
Another one begins

And you move on
And one moves in
Another's gone and a
Another one begins

I like it. Reminds me of "Ticky Tacky Houses"

Not sure why but I thought
"Three of three where to from here"
didn't fit the cadence

If so, "Three of three persevere" maybe?
If not, ignore this post.

I'm not sure I understood the assignment.
Nonsense syllables don't have to be nonsense or do they?
Is it the "Sha la la la la la la la la la la dee dah" part in Brown Eyed Girl?
In which case Nonsense syllables are nonsense just acting as fillers to keep the beat of the song.

Anyway, since this is going to be (minimalistic?) bare bones, I would think it's success would depend on the chord progression?
And considering the topic I would guess a minor key?
But I'm just thinking aloud and incoherently.

And so,
This one moves on
And another moves in
This one's gone and
Another steps in
This one ends and
Another one begins

KR2 out (and pretty in plum)

It's the rock that gives the stream its music . . . and the stream that gives the rock its roll.

Hey Mate ,

Long time since I did this , reply to a song ...Hope I get it right { joke}

I really like the flow of this Paul , but you said "Slow March " , when I read it , I feel it shouldn't be too slow but more a little up tempo thing ..Just my demented brain off with fairies again { these pain killers are awesome } ... :P :P

I am going post my favorite piece of this , and I am NOT being sarcastic or anything , but this is brilliant I love it

hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm, hmm hmm hmm

To me I think it's a very clever use of humming , and would bring a real flavor to music ....

I did how ever enjoy reading this verse and thought to myself , thats awesome ....

March in time
Expressive lines are never kind
Things held dear
Three of three where to from here

Once again Mr Brady top piece of writing ....

Cheers
Trev... :note2: :note2: :note1:

Here is to you as good as you are
And here is to me as bad as I am
As good as you are and as bad as I am
I'm as good as you are as bad as I am

It's got a three count to it.
Maybe they're waltzing instead of marching.
Come on Trev, that's what you like about it, admit it.

LOL, I can REALLY relate to that!!! Funny, but when I play guitar, I've got a pretty good sense of rhythm and timing - even when I was a BAD guitarist, at least I was in time. But put me on a dance floor, I've got all the natural rhythm of a traffic accident. In fact, women who've danced with me would probably rather be in a traffic accident! Or in a queue at the post office - or under an exploding volcano - or at home watching TV........

Anyway, back to the song. That's what we're here for.

I like the minimalist lyrics - we don't see too many. They make sense to me, as much as I can make sense of anything these days, anyway. I'd really like to hear this one put to music - I'm thinking an almost funereal drumbeat to start, picking up the pace a little, then speeding up to an almost punk-rock tempo for the last verse - just to get the generational point across, you know? Seems these days, everything's all about speed - how fast your computer is, how fast you can play that Malmsteen riff, how fast you can latch on to the latest fad/style/trend, how fast you can send a txt message.....good for you, PBee, you haven't been seduced by the dark side - you keep writing in your own way, your own style, and it's still working. It's a long way from broke, and it definitely doesn't need fixing.

I hope you'll record this one - I'd like to see how it turns out.

:D :D :D

Me too . . . want to hear this.
I could use a good funeral march right about now.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

KR2,
Is it the "Sha la la la la la la la la la la dee dah" part in Brown Eyed Girl?
Yeah that's my understanding.
And considering the topic I would guess a minor key?
No, it's in the key of F

“Three of three where to from here” I haven't tried to sing that yet I think it should be ok, I have managed to get my voice around this line” Look ahead see behind” which was a little tricky.

Trev, I hope you recover soon. I have two options with the hmm's either directly at the end of the verse or after a little musical interlude. Ive tried it with both and I like both of them so I just have to wait until I record it properly and see how it goes then.

Vic, I hadn't thought about increasing the tempo as the song progresses, good idea to relate it to the “need for speed” these days. Even our perception of time seems to change as we get older, time seems to go faster.

I have a very rough take of this song and will try to record it properly this week.

Cheers
Paul

I've managed to get some time to record this here http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=328886
I recorded it at dusk so if you listen really hard in some parts you can here the birds outside making a noise.

Cheers
Paul
