Eyes On Me.

I fired one round into the ceiling,
To get everybody's attention,
"Stay calm, nobody gets hurt," I shouted,
You could feel the tension,
"Fill these bags with money,
I'm collecting for my pension!"

And everybody's eyes were on me,
Hanging on every word I said,
Everybody's eyes were on me,
I felt their hatred, panic and dread,
Everybody's eyes were on me,
Probably wishing I was dead.

We got away with the money,
Changed cars a few blocks away,
To throw the cops off the scent,
But we didn't last out the day,
They soon tracked us down,
And then led us away.

And everybody's eyes were on me,
As they led me away to the cells,
Everybody's eyes were on me,
Don't think they were wishing me well,
Everybody's eyes were on me,
Hoping I'd catch hell.

Well they put me away for a long long time,
Told me I had to pay for my crimes,
I had my share of trouble inside,
There's no place to run and hide,
I stood up and fought for my rights,
I paid my dues because I saw the light,
The error of my ways was plain to me,
So I buried myself in work and study....

I came out of it all a better man,
I got a legal degree,
Decided to put my experience to use,
Now that prison's behind me,
I help my fellow man whenever I can,
Now I'm a boon to society.

Now everybody's eyes are on me,
For all the right reasons this time,
Yes everybody's eyes are on me,
I'm the foremost spokesman on crime,
Everybody's eyes are on me,
I've been there and done the time.

Now that was hard going. I tried to be a bit ambitious with this, and do that Dylanesque trick of writing from inside someone else's shoes....not sure I've got away with it all that well. It's about someone I know fairly well - in his youth, he was sentenced for armed robbery and spent a long time in prison. However, when he was inside, he decided to make something of himself, studied hard, and when he got out, put his experience to use. He's now an acknowledged expert on Prison Law and Prison Reform, and his opinions are regularly quoted in the papers and on TV.

There's a lot more I could have written, but this would have been a real epic...pretty long as it is!

Vic - Way cool song/story. :)

On the first read thru, just as I was reading thru the first verse....
I got a sense of that 54 song "Framed" by The Robins.
Later covered by Richie Valens ( and done in the movie La Bamba ).

It fit perfectly into that: Hit the I chord/stop and sing; I fired one round into the ceiling, to get everybody's attention - I chord/Stop next two lines....

You know what i'm talkin' about????

Nice ending.
As I was goin' thru it, I almost expected a '1952 Vincent Black Lightning' ending.

I thought maybe you would have some irony in it like - they forget to put the "I" on his gravestone. :)

Glad it all turned out well.

Vic

I read this a few times and one song kept ringing in my ears after I walked away , ,,,

Hurricane by Dylan

I don't know why , but it has that feel to me , and that style of music in it ..

I reserve the right , to mention my little problems with some wording due to the fact that yourself and a few others here always prove me wrong when put to song ..

Will wait with batted breath for a listen ...

I do like what I am reading here , but have a little problem with one line ....

Here is to you as good as you are
And here is to me as bad as I am
As good as you are and as bad as I am
I'm as good as you are as bad as I am

Hi Vic

Ambitious definitely but you pulled it off pretty well. I kind of lean more toward Jonny Cash than Dylan suits Jonny's drawl I reckon (oops getting into character).

Very good piece of writing all round though

Good stuff

Bob

Yeah Vic,

Works for me in the main. There are couple of lines in there that may change on the recording cos they feel a bit awkward with the groove that I had in my head, but that's pretty normal. Look forward to hearing it.

Cheers

Paul
