==========Revised Version==========
Gideon was a swindler, still he loved his wife
He swore revenge on the bandits that took her life
Devils on the run; chase them to the end
Send them all to Hell on a road called revenge
Josiah found Gideon while he was headed west
His age and inexperience made the boy a pest
Gideon agreed reluctantly to let him share the trail
Even the best intentions can pave a road to Hell
Chorus
Devils on the run; chase them to the end
Send them all to Hell on a road called revenge
Devils on the run; judged and now condemned
No one deserves forgiveness on a road called revenge
The hills are full of dangers; best ride side by side
Towns full of strangers; best watch who you fight
Gideon helped Josiah; killed to save his life
Josiah saved Gideon with a shot repaid in kind
Josiah got to thinking about the things his mother said
Forgiveness is for the living; revenge is for the dead
Gideon said it plainly those men deserved to die
Those cowards who killed our loved ones; your parents and my wife
chorus
When Gideon found the killer Cain he strung him up to die
Cain said he was hired to kill a swindler's wife
A deal gone wrong in Texas; just business in his eyes
Josiah shot the rope and spared the killer's life
Boy, you don't know how it feels to see your loved one's killer's eyes
Josiah screamed Yes, I do. I really do ‘cause I see you
My parents died from your swindling lies
I hated you like you hate him and it turns out you were right
No one deserves forgiveness that's why it's called forgiveness
Given as a gift; a chance to make things right
Josiah's shot went high but Gideon shot him low
Cain was reaching for a gun but Gideon didn't know
Gideon held Josiah said Come on, boy, don't die
Josiah said I forgive you; Gideon cried and cried
We're all devils on the run; judged and now condemned
All bound for Hell on a road called revenge
No one deserves forgiveness but I've heard it once said
Forgiveness is for the living; revenge is for the dead

Another gem James.Reminds me of "the Man Who Shot Liberty Valance .
Falling in love is like learning to play the guitar; first you learn to follow the rules, then you learn to play with your heart.
The story circles around nicely.
Hi Kathy and Andy,
I hadn't heard the Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, but now that I have, I can see the similarities.
Thanks for the listens and posts :D
James
The lyrics could stand alone as good poetry. The music fits nicely.
Is that you playing the fiddle in 2 places? Another one of your musical talents?
Smooth key change. I had to go back and listen again to make sure it really happened.

Hi Rene,
The lyrics could stand alone as good poetry.
Thanks for mentioning that. I've made many attempts before to capture stories in songs, but it often depended on background knowledge of the story. This one works....maybe b/c it was a shorter story, but I think the authors made a good story, so I was easier to work with.

No talent claimed. It's from Loopmasters.com

Smooth key change.
I realized I made it hard on myself having the key change fall on the first beat with the lyric and the pickup note in the measure before with the old key, but it seemed to work.
Thanks for the listen and post :D
