Just the story of how I came to love music....need I say more?

1963, was the year that set me free,
I was six years old, I discovered rock'n'roll,
1964, I discovered more and more,
And rock'n'roll spoke to my very soul.

The Beatles and the Stones,
I was never alone,
They poured my life into the radio,
The Kinks and Manfred Mann,
My life was in their hands,
All I wanted was a little more rock'n'roll!

I was nowhere near my teens, but I knew in my dreams,
All I wanted to be was a rock'n'roll star.
My parents didn't agree, they had plans for me,
That involved Maths and English rather than guitar.

But the Beatles and the Stones,
Made sure I was never alone,
They poured my life into the radio,
The Kinks and Manfred Mann,
My life was in their hands,
All I wanted was a little more rock'n'roll!

1974, didn't matter what had gone before,
I'd got a job and I'd got my first guitar,
Wish I could say, there was one day,
When I realised I'd never be a star.

But the Beatles and the Stones,
Made sure I was never alone,
They poured my life into the radio,
The Kinks and Manfred Mann,
My life was in their hands,
All I wanted was a little more rock'n'roll!

84 went by so fast, '94 just couldn't last,
And into the next century,
But I still remeber those oldies, oldies but goldies,
Music of today, it's all rubbish to me....

I got the Beatles and the Stones,
They're in my bones,
Listen to 'em om Classic Rock radio,
And the Kinks and Manfred Mann,
Still part of the rock'n'roll plan
I'll never forget that that old rock'n'roll!

I got the Beatles and the Stones, and all those long-forgotten songs,
I got youtube to refresh my memory....
I got all those songs and more, back to 1964,
And rock'n'roll still means the world to me,
Yeah, rock'n'roll still means the world to me,
It's always meant all the world to me,
It'll always be all the world to me,
Rock'n'roll will never die....and that's the way it should be!

:-) :) :)

Good work here, Vic.

I want to first suggest a single change to the last line of the chorus:
All I wanted was a little more rock'n'roll!

"Little" truly has no place in this line. It's not true, and it conflicts with everything the song says!

I like the progression though time of the verses. It's natural and matter-of-fact without being overly sentimental.

The other suggestion I'd offer is in the first verse:

1963, was the year that set me free,
I was six years old, I discovered rock'n'roll,
1964, I discovered more and more,
And rock'n'roll spoke to my very soul.

I'm not sure the second "discovered" is needed other than to fill space. You could simply go with something like:
1963, was the year that set me free,
I was six years old, I discovered rock'n'roll,
1964, the radio played more and more,
And rock'n'roll spoke to my very soul.

or even:
1963, was the year that set me free,
I was six years old, I discovered rock'n'roll,
1964, I heard more and more and more,
And rock'n'roll spoke to my very soul.

Just a thought.

Looking forward to hearing this at some point. Any musical ideas as yet?

Peace

I like the suggestions, David, I'll do a re-write later....:-)

Musically, I'm thinking of a slightly weird cross between "Get Back" for one guitar and (as suggested to Roy earlier!) some jangly 12-string for guitar two, in keeping with the sound of 1964.....with maybe a little harmonica thrown in, a la Lennon or Paul Jones, they both did it so well....

:D :D :D

Hi Vic,

Reads well :D Seems like you hit your target of sharing how, when and why music was and is important in your life.

Thanks for sharing.

In the mid 60's the chorus was the song. Good job. I like David's suggestion. Looking forward to hearing it.

I wonder if the years progression verses could be more interesting if done as sort of an energy building bridge type of thing? Something tells me they at least belong back to back and not separated by a chorus.

Other than that and other suggestions and tips mentioned earlier, it should be a cool tune. :D
