I'm back after some downtime, and eager to write some more songs. I hadn't tried this technique before so I just jumped straight in with some books, newspapers and websites I had lying around. The result looks like a song but I'm not sure if I really believe in it (yet).

[v1]
It's midnight and she's up drinking
What terrible oaths she swears
The old gang went on to other things
Broken to bits in the love affair

[v2]
And grief is a part of life
But she was rarely off a plane
She did not have a ticket
Declaring she was not for sale

[ch]
None of you could ever understand
There's no working your way up the ranks
We intend to be much better prepared
If that's not in your plans

repeat chorus

[v3]
Tall grass, wild flowers and trees
Will return again and again
That's the understatement of the year, I know
So welcome back to your beloved Manhattan

[v4]
She turned to me and said
All of this is unreal
This is child's play
So let's try something a little different this week

[ch]
None of you could ever understand
There's no working your way up the ranks
We intend to be much better prepared
If that's not in your plans

repeat chorus

The story of those lost decades
The story of those lost decades

repeat chorus x2

For the record, here are the 25 phrases I selected from the source material before starting the song:

This week, let's try something a little different [thanks, Vic! 8) ]
No working your way up the ranks
The old gang went on to other things
When it is midnight and he is up drinking
What terrible oaths he swears
Broken to bits in the love affair
All of this unreal
She did not have a ticket
Grief - it is part of life
She was rarely off a plane
She replied that she was not for sale
Nobody could understand such coincidence
She turned to me
This is child's play
We intend to be much better prepared
If that's not in your plans
As we go to press
A welcome return to his beloved Manhattan
To develop more and faster
To return again and again
Tall grass, wild flowers and trees
A composer without a heart
That's the understatement of the year, I know
The story of those lost decades
Within an hour of the vote

Hi Martin,

Good go at the assignment. :D Unfortunately, if there is an underlying plot you are weaving together, I'm not getting it. :? I think the randomness has it's place as getting something going but then there should be some shaped direction with the pieces...I know John Cage would disagree.

Thanks for sharing. :D

James
