Got the idea for this late last night, had a verse and a chorus, didn't quite know where to go next - got up today and guess what? Sun's shining, it's a beautiful day! Still, I managed to get it finished.....
I'm actually blaming Marilyn for the wet July we've just had.....a few weeks back, she put the radio on; instead of the classic rock channel I normally listen to, she put an oldies station on - and it was playing "Might As Well Rain Till September!" At that precise moment, the heavens opened - and they've been leaking pretty much ever since.
Anyway, here's the song - it may read like a blues, but I've got more of an up-tempo 12-bar boogie riff going through my head - think of Canned Heat's "On The Road Again," or Status Quo's "Don't Waste My Time" as regards tempo and feel.
It's Raining
Well it's raining, always raining, gets depressing after a while,
And these grey skies, constant grey skies, don't help you to smile,
Where's the summer, there's no summer, forecast was for sunshine,
But it's raining, still raining, and has been for a long time!
Ever-present are the clouds blotting out the sun,
It's August already and summer refuses to come,
My coat and hat are ready by the front door,
It's raining again and and we're expecting more and more and more....
Well it ain't stopped, never does stop, no cricket on TV,
Just replays, constant replays, from the 1970's,
When the sun shined, there was sunshine, from April to October,
Had my shirt off, and the shorts on, ten minutes and turn me over....
Nowadays all I see are the clouds blotting out the sun,
It's August already and summer refuses to come,
My coat and hat are ready by the front door,
It's raining again and and we're expecting more and more and more....
Well it's raining, still raining, I know it's good for the flowers,
But I do wish, yes I do wish, It'd just stop for an hour,
And the grey skies, and the black clouds, would leave just for today,
And the sunshine, bright sunshine, would melt my cares away.....
But all I can see are the clouds blotting out the sun,
It's August already and summer refuses to come,
My coat and hat are ready by the front door,
It's raining again and and we're expecting more and more and more....
And it's raining, still raining, harder than before,
And it will rain, yes it will rain, it'll pour and pour and pour....

Just a couple of alternative word choices:
And these grey skies, constant grey skies, don't help you to smile,
And these grey skies, constant grey skies, dampens any smile,
It's August already and summer refuses to come,
It's August already and summer has yet to come,
It's the rock that gives the stream its music . . . and the stream that gives the rock its roll.
Flows well, Vic,
No pun intended eh KR2?
Rock on!

I'm nowhere near Chicago. I've got six string, 8 fingers, two thumbs, it's dark 'cos I'm wearing sunglasses - Hit it!
And these grey skies, constant grey skies, dampens any smile,
Like it, Ken. You know me too well - I'm a sucker for a good play on words!

Vic,
As said before "It flows well" but to me it reads more as a poem.
What do you have in mind musically?

Thanks for comments, John...I did mention in the preamble, "it may read like a blues, but I've got more of an up-tempo 12-bar boogie riff going through my head - think of Canned Heat's "On The Road Again," or Status Quo's "Don't Waste My Time" as regards tempo and feel." Nothing fancy - 12 bar blues(ish) I-IV-V with a couple of occasional add-ons (A D and E with a couple of sus4s and a C chord in the turnaround.)
Now if I just had somewhere to record - house is full to bursting at the moment - I'd be a happy bunny!

My Bad Vic,
I missed that part. I must still be recovering from this weekend.
Nice write, Vic :D
I like these lines a lot.
"Well it's raining, still raining, I know it's good for the flowers,
But I do wish, yes I do wish, It'd just stop for an hour,"
I can hear the boogie sound going on.....But it's raining, still raining, and has been for a long time!
The repetition here should be good for the style
Thanks for sharing and the topics :D
James
Aw, Vic, this is glowing :D
Flows well, Vic,
No pun intended eh KR2?
Really like the flow, too (and the repetitions).. it's different ..and will make a grand, driving song, I think :D
My favourites:
Well it ain't stopped, never does stop, no cricket on TV,
Just replays, constant replays, from the 1970's, I know it's depressing, whenever the weatehr prevents you from going outside and whenever you really have nothing else to do than watch TV, there is absolutely nothing interesting on
Well it's raining, still raining, I know it's good for the flowers,
But I do wish, yes I do wish, It'd just stop for an hour, :D
My coat and hat are ready by the front door,
It's raining again and and we're expecting more and more and more.... Poor lonely hat and coat! :( :D
Thanks for sharing!
cheers,
