I'm thinking a Tom Waits kind of treatment with a walking bass line
ala Hit The Road Jack or Stray Cat Strut

Ghoul's Night Out

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=8278169

Bonfires burning in the full moon light
Don't think that it's safe to go out tonight
I'll be hanging Braids of Garlic to keep evil away
Tonight the Ghouls are coming out to play

There'll be Ghost and Goblins ,Vampires too
All of them drinking from a Witches Brew
I don't think those Silver Bullets or Wooden Stakes gonna do
When Old Grim Reaper's got his eyes on you

Bonfires burning in the full moon light
Old Nick laughing as his Demons take flight
You better cast a Spell to keep the Hellhounds at bay
Tonight the Ghouls are coming out to play

AH WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

(Bridge)

Don't go walking in them woods all alone
You might meet a Wolf dressed in sheep's clothes
Keep Holy Water and some Crosses at hand
That Stranger at the door may not be a man

Bonfires burning in the full moon light
Don't think that it's safe to go out tonight
I'll be hanging Braids of Garlic to keep evil away
Tonight the Ghouls are coming out to play

There'll be Monsters and Werewolves howling at the moon
Someone saw that Creature from the Black Lagoon
And Black Cowled Woman on a Withes Broom
I don't think the morning can come too soon

Bonfires burning in the full moon light
Old Nick laughing as his Demons take flight
You better cast a Spell to keep the Hellhounds at bay
Tonight the Ghouls are coming out to play

Freddie and Jason, Micheal Myers all said
It's gonna be The Night of The Living Dead
Put a bolt on your door check under your bed
I just saw a Horseman and he's got no head

AH WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...

Hey John,

You sure packed a lot of characters and character into this one. I get a feel for the style you are referring to. :D

One line suggestion:
Put a bolt on the door and climb into your bed
Consider
Put a bolt on the door and check under your bed

Nice mood with your original sound effects

Thanks for sharing.

James

Thanks James

Excellent Suggestion!

Why didn't I think of that in the first place?

One edit.. take it or leave it... You go through the whole song mentioning these really iconic creatures and then in the last verse you go to Jason, Freddie, and Michael meyers.. all sort of creations of the past 30 odd years. Songs tend to have more staying power if they stay away from pop culture. ANd of course this is just a writing exercise and its supposed to be kind of silly (I think.. yes?) but I still think that's good advice for any songwriter... Keep it timeless.

Also its really strange how fast this song put itself to music in my head as I was reading and then strange again how different it was when I heard it in mp3. Yours was way more slow/brooding than I had in my head... and I love slow and brooding... You know me... But if you'd let me record my take on it I'd be happy to share it.

Thanks Marv.

Your probably right about the pop culture references and I'll keep
that in mind in my future writing.

Also strange that I recorded and posted a faster version that I was unsatisfied with so came up
with a new arrangement. Go ahead and take a shot at your arrangement. I would love to here
what you do with it.

Mine doesn't have neat sound effects and I was just sorta reading the words off my screen. That's all the excuses I have.

This is how it sounded to me when I read it.

Thanks for sharing Marv.

The really odd thing is your version is closer to what I
was thinking when I wrote it. So I guess that makes my
version the alternate take. :?

Cool story, like the MP3. I think James' suggestion was a good one - pretty obvious when you think bout it, but I can think of literally dozens of times when I've received similar feedback and kicked myself for not having thought of it first.

One question Marv raised....I'm pretty sure that Freddie, Jason, and Mike Myers ARE iconic figures by now. Hell, they've all been around for at least 25 years or so, and I think most people would recognise the reference. They're so well engrained into popular culture that the first names of two of them are instantly recognisable...at least in the context of this song, and IMO that's what matters.

Comparing John's mp3 and Marv's mp3....well, I honestly don't know which I prefer, I love both takes. Suggestion....it'd be nice if you two got together and did a "joint" version of this. Maybe if John quickened up the delivery a little, did acoustic guitar and vocals, and Marv added.....whatever....and duetted doubled the vocals? Seems to me this song was MADE for a collab between you two!

:D :D :D

Hi John,

I love the "AH WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" ! If you did a joint version, you could keep both the AH WHOOOs, maybe first the slower, quiter Celt AH WHOO and then later the carrying Marvellous Optimist AH WHOO :D
And I think the song work better in a faster version, for me at least

Can't really connect to all of the monsters and uncanny figures in the lyrics (there are just so many  ), but I think that lines like
I don't think the morning can come too soon
[. . .]
Put a bolt on your door check under your bed
I just saw a Horseman and he's got no head
are not only excellent in themselves but work very well in the song! they somehow make it more real to me, if that makes any sense

Thanks for sharing the lyrcis and both of your mp3s!
Cheers,
straycat.
