If you like Jazz, you must listen to Emily Remler
She's a wonderful guitarist, who sadly died of a heart attack at the age of 32, probably in large part due to her problems with heroin.
Her album with Larry Coryell is my favorite work of her's, but frankly any of her discs are worth owning.

Ana Popovich- One of the best Blues players around right now Male or Female
Mimi Fox is a great Jazz player
Jennifer Batten- So damn good that she can play note for note with Jeff Beck. Not many players male or female can make that boast
Ellen McIlwaine is a great slide player
Sharon Isben, a student of Segovia is an amazing classical player
Badi Assad plays traditional Brazilian guitar
I've mentioned Rory Block before, she is the Queen of country blues
Fiona Boyes is an Australian Blues player
BOnnie Raitt of course
Immature? Of course I'm immature Einstein, I'm 50 and in a Rock and ROll band.

Garbage is cool, I'm not sure she plays any other instruments though.

I got a chance to talk with her a few years ago at a folk festival that she was playing (and I was a stagehand at).
What an amazing lady.
She has played with, or has stories about almost every blues guitar ledgend you've ever thought about.
She headlined one night of the festival, solo, and left the crowd (and the other performers) in total awe.
I wrapped a newspaper ’round my head
So I looked like I was deep

I'm really into Eva Cassidy's haunting, minimalist style right now.
Amazing the simplicity of it.
Apparently she learned to play from her father at an early age.
I like Bonnie Rait's version of 'I can't make you love me'. Wish I could play heavier blues style like she does. She's a heavy contender.
I first learned from Joan Baez' folk style and listened to Buffy St. Marie, Judy Collins, Dolly Parton during my beginning years but I like the Spanish classical 'estudios' to keep me in balance. Liona Boyd.
Still haven't advanced to an electric guitar so I'm a real snail in my progress.
Having an amp on my classical nylon string is a big step.
Portamento - The ability to move from a wrong note to the right one without anyone noticing the original mistake.
Harmonics - The buzzing sound that string instruments make.
Impromptu - A carefully worked out composition.
I'm a big Eva Cassidy fan, too! I love to play her version of 'Ain't No Sunshine'! It's absolutely beautiful! If anyone would care for the tab, just let me know.
:D

As for female guitar heroes, I'd say Carrie Brownstein could hold her own against any of the (male) "guitar greats".
Anyone who's see Sleater-Kinney live knows the greatness that is Carrie. :)
