I always use a pick but I have nothing against those who don't. I use a pick mostly because that's the way I started and I'm too old and lazy to learn...
Keith mostly (almost always) plays a 5 string Tele tuned to open G (no 6th string).
Pretty near everyone I know uses the middle finger too. And they do OK generally. So I wouldn't worry too much.
