I bought Mel Bay's Guitar Chords. No cheese for me! :D
I still remember some of the cheesy lines in Fasttrack Guitar 1:
"Pickups aren't just trucks..."
"Some more notes on music - ...pardon the pun!"
"About the CD - ...no it's not a coaster!"

You might try "Metal Guitar," which is published by Progressive. Their books are pretty good for getting both a grasp of the basics and taking you a bit beyond to the first steps of soloing and improvisation. But once you have some basics down, a good idea would be to get a book like "Metal Guitar Bible" so that you can see how the things you learned in Progressive's book are done in actually songs.
Hope this helps.
Peace
LOL hey patrick drew, what kind of music do you listen too?

I listen to Metal. All kinds - Progressive, Black, Death, Speed, Power, etc. You name it, I probably listen to it. I listen to Metal probably 90% of the time.
I have a weird taste for traditional folk music of various European and East Asian countries as well.
I also like to listen to classical when I sleep.
And, DHodge I'll be sure to check out those books.
