One addition to Greybeards post.
Using the scale of the Chord you are using, say the E you referred to.
The notes of an E chord are 1st E, 3rd G#, 5th B. Now you want to add a 7th to make it E7, the 7th note of the E major scale is D#, OK? so you want to flat it (lower it 1/2 step) that dring it down to D natural (not Db as you might think)
So you could play that a couple of ways:
020100 or 0221030 or you can think of other ways to play it.
One more thing, if a chord is written Emaj7 the 7th is not flatted.
Major 7ths are not flatted.
You will learn this and much much more as time goes by.
Best of luck

Topic starter

does it matter which way you play it, do they sound the same? and for different chords how do you figure out different ways to play it that could be easier?

and do you have any tips for learning the notes of all the scales? because i guess in the long run this is going to make it a lot easier for me?

thanks
