It was called a lot of things back in the 60's & 70's, depending where you lived and so forth. The drug culter was alive or well back then , and was a big part of the music scene(for better or worse) Lots of bands like the "Doobie Brothers", the Stones, and the "Electric Prunes " were influenced by the drug culter back then. Its just part of rock-n-roll history 101. Thankfully most of us old guys grew out of that kind of thing   ( not that all of us did that kind of thing) -the dog

I am fixin to find out myself about this topic.
I have played with my brother-in-law and regularly jam with my daughter who plays keyboard but I was invited to something new.
Seems one of my neighbors about 1/2 mile down the road has regular jam sessions every Saturday night. He has a large country home and I am told 15 to 20 musicians show up every saturday and just start playing.
At first I was apprehensive and made excuses, "my amp is to big and heavy" He told me just bring my axe and a chord no problem.
Still nervous but I am going to do this.

I've been playing for about a year and a half. Making reasonble progress and getting more fired up as I develope more skills (other hobbies are definately suffering  ). My brother started playing a few weeks ago and we get together each weekend to jam. Helps us both! Really makes me stay rock solid on timing to give him a good base to work from.

I'm a construction superintendent. My current job has upwards of 75 people working on it. I only get to know the supervisors of the various trades. The plumbing supervisor and I get along particularly well. He looked like he might be into music :D , so a made a remark or two during coordination meetings with music conotations. Sure enough, he picked up on it and we talked some music. Turns out, he's played guitar for over 25 years. So far we've hooked up once and it was tremendous. I was a little nervous but the only way to really learn is play with people better than you.

So in return for showing me some technique ( I had some questions on things I'd heard but not quite sure how it was done and making sure the things I was doing were correct), I played rhythm so he could practice leads. That was educational too! He also brought a dobro style guitar which I'd only seen pictures of and had me playing it as he improved over it. Can't wait to get together again (which will be this weekend).

So, no question, whether you're an up and coming guitarist on the way to becoming a professional musician or a hobbyist that likes music, don't be bashful, get out there and play with people!

Jim

Definitely get out and play with other people there's nothing like it.

I've had mixed experiences though. There's a few guys that get to together every Thursday that I used to work with . A couple acoustics and a drummer. They have a huge repetoire of songs they play so when I go I can either try and play some leads or play along with the rhythm on some others and the ones I can't play I sing (badly) or sit out.

I also get together with another guitarist and that has been a little bit of a struggle to get a good flow going. I'm not sure what the problem is but for some reason we kind of flounder around a bit every time we get together. I really want to get a few songs down and do some open mics but I'm not sure if we'll ever get there.

In both cases I always feel like it helps my playing more than anything.

Yep, as per my earlier post you definitely have to have the right chemistry for jamming to really be enjoyable. I had 6 guitarists at my place jamming once and it was the most chaotic mess, nothing was getting done and everyone was off timing.

Dog,

Yes I definitely want to do it. I've been meaning to get back with you about it. I'm going to Myrtle Beach this weekend and I know you work on weekends but maybe next week we can work out a time to get together.

I've heard your stuff and your good, hopefully I won't embarass myself.
