Well, ... it's certainly topical. It's a first draft I just recently wrote up after I got hit with the lighting bolt. It's rough but I prefer posting it this way. I don't usually share my writings, especially 1st drafts, but I'm glad people are responding and this is something I wanted to share.

Unfortunately, I don't have a melody to this yet. It's just a writing.
-------------------------
Katrina

Hurricane in my eye
I see you high up in the sky
Crashing down on land fall
Destruction in your wake,
Images captured you day by day
Cuz when the levee broke loose
You captured us in your own way
We know hell is coming soon
And the glowing box shows me doom
Gangs looting and pillaging
For all that they find
I never thought I'd see this
in my own time
I never thought I'd see this
not in my right mind
Priorities of ours are all
Pushed back some, I'd say
N'awlins don't cry
You'll be back another day
People living like mad men
Trying to survive
Hunting and gathering
For their families lives
Are at risk, gravely so
Where's the federal aid
The Red Cross, the GI Joe?
President Bush get off yer ranch
And go down to Bourbon Street
Leaders assume your stance
People are dying, babies are crying
A hurricane rained down from the skies
And destroyed our own people
What have you got to say?
Now I'm not a fool to think
Man controls the weather
But with our recent track record
There's no one better
Than ourselves to blame
Cuz global warming is as real
As Reality TV is lame
Politicians politicking
Ya, and so is the time
So get them relief
And stop all this dying
Cuz it's breaking my heart
To see the TV screen fill
With images of N'Awlins
& Mississipii footin' the bill
Of all of our people's
Own silly mistakes
Like dumping McDonalds
All over the freeway
And spraying aersol cans
Into your hair
Driving to the store
Even tho you live near
Throwing out water bottles
and not picking up trash
Just because 'it's not yours'
Well, you're an ass
Because it's all of ours
We all contribute
And we all suffer
So next time you see
some litter in the street
Don't think twice
about bending your knee
Picking it up and tossing away
The problems that approach
Proven on this day
Not to be idle threats
But guarantees
I don't wanna see what's next
It might be scary

Katrina, Katrina
Look what you've done
Katrina, Katrina
Now you're on the run
Katrina, Katrina,
Look what you've done
Katrina, Katrina
Go away, shine the sun

Ain't no strangers
If you asked me, mister
Cuz all the people I see
are my brothers and sisters
They're yours, too
Don't ya know?
So open your heart
Let your love show
The haves all got out
And Up to higher ground
Have nots still there
And Getting cut down
Helicopters landing in vain
People shooting cops
Mayors going insane
SOS, ASAP, MIA
Where's the assistance
Did they hear what he say?
It was a state of emergency
Before Katrina showed up
Where's all the supplies
Cuz none ain't enough
And no one on TV yet mentions
What's plainly clear to see
All the people still struggling
Black as can be

Katrina, Katrina
Look what you've done
Katrina, Katrina
Now you're on the run
Katrina, Katrina,
Look what you've done
Katrina, Katrina
Go away, shine the sun

Great news, we're moving, hun
Ya, well where we goin?
N'awlins, a place you'll soon be lovin
Wow, that's great, I can't wait
Never ever been to New Orleans
Can't imagine what I'll soon see
Voodoo and vampires, Ann Rice right?
Bourbon Street, Mardi Gras
Parties all night
Jazz music blaring, hear for yourself
Pay a visit with Paris' 25 cents
And don't worry about the crime
Highest murder rate
But we'll be fine
Ya, ya, I know about the city
Some say like a bath tub sinking
They've missed all close calls
So stop with that thinking
And they got levees
To ensure some protection
Are they updated, you ask
Well, uh they're still doing some testin'

Katrina, Katrina
Look what you've done
Katrina, Katrina
Now you're on the run
Katrina, Katrina,
Look what you've done
Katrina, Katrina
Go away, shine the sun

I must admit it's great to see
Celebrites mobilizing all on TV
It seems we've created
A defacto response team
For every disaster that
Strikes human beings
Tsunamis and bombings, disasters on edge
Hurricanes and storms, your money to pledge
Start up the band
Cuz we've got a show
A telethon, a food drive
It's all a go
Urge the citizens
To open their wallets
You can't donate enough
to people who've lost it
My mind wanders off to see
If people would still donate
Without the celebrities
I'd like to think so
Cuz people need help
And we need to show
That we're all one
Stuck in this place
We're all the same team
the Human Race

Katrina, Katrina
Look what you've done
Katrina, Katrina
Now you're on the run
Katrina, Katrina,
Go away, shine the sun
Katrina, Katrina
Can't believe what you've done

nice. Very nice. :) you've really captured the event from so many different angles; doesn't really matter about the length lol, its cool I like it. I love these lines:

And we need to show
That we're all one
Stuck in this place
We're all the same team
the Human Race

so true. Your style is unique, infact very intreguing; I'd love to hear the music for some of these songs of yours.

Great work!
Jacqui :)

Thank you, Jacqui. Your kind words are genuinely appreciated.

Also, the line 'Well you're an donkey' is supposed to be 'Well your an a--' but GN is censoring, I guess.

Lots of good ideas there, almost enough for 3 songs. Would be interesting to hear how you would perform this one.

One day !!

Cuz global warming is as real
As Reality TV is lame
I hate reality TV. lol.
N'awlins don't cry
You'll be back another day
this is the bomb dropper that made me unserstand the song and go back to re-read it. Very moving. I loved these lines:Where's all the supplies
Cuz none ain't enoughWe know hell is coming soon
And the glowing box shows me doom I also love Zeppelin:when the levee brokeThere are a LOT of good lines that I wanted to quote, but I'm lazy. I loved the chorus, and the end chorus's twist. I want to see what you come up with in the SSG, so check it out. And, as always, keep it up!

There's a thin fine line between hate and rage.
Now watch the line be crossed and break!
