"a hard rain's a gonna fall"

That's one that I like a lot to. Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen is a favourite at the moment as well - but really there's hundreds of them.

Oddly enough, if I really think about "meaningful" I'd probably have to pick "Happy Birthday to You", for the following reasons:

1. Whenever I sing it I'm celebrating a milestone for somebody who means something to me. There's always something good about a celebration of life.

2. When I sing it I'm surrounded by friends, and we're always having a good time. And

3. I can actually sing it without forgetting the words or doing weird unexpected vocal things. :)

What The World Needs Now is Love...(sweet love) I think this song was very meaningful when it came out and is still now, simply because the world does need love. i realize this all sounds corny but im sure you all know that what goes on today is a much less than desirable. We still have bombings and war thinking, and killings.. All these things aren't needed, we need some more peace. The message in this song is definately one that needs to get out.

I know it wasn't reason,
That made me do what wasn't right
but sometimes my heart falls prone
to the nature of your spite.

A Case Of You by Joni Mitchell

Just before our love got lost you said
I am as constant as a northern star
And I said, constant in the darkness
Where's that at?
If you want me I'll be in the bar

On the back of a cartoon coaster
In the blue tv screen light
I drew a map of canada
Oh, canada
With your face sketched on it twice

Oh you are in my blood like holy wine
Oh and you taste so bitter but you taste so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you
I could drink a case of you darling
And I would still be on my feet
Oh I'd still be on my feet

Oh I am a lonely painter
I live in a box of paints
I'm frightened by the devil
And I'm drawn to those ones that ain't afraid

I remember that time that you told me, you said
Love is touching souls
Surely you touched mine
Cause part of you pours out of me
In these lines from time to time

Oh you are in my blood like holy wine
And you taste so bitter but you taste so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of you
I could drink a case of you darling
Still I'd be on my feet
And still be on my feet

I met a woman
She had a mouth like yours
She knew your life
She knew your devils and your deeds
And she said
Color go to him, stay with him if you can
Oh but be prepared to bleed
Oh but you are in my blood you're my holy wine
Oh and you taste so bitter, bitter and so sweet

Oh I could drink a case of you darling
Still I'd be on my feet
I'd still be on my feet

There are a lot. But if I had to pick one right now. It would have to be "Landlock'd Blues" by Bright Eyes. Just an amazing song.

A couple more: For You by Staind and then a newer one: Best Of You by Foo Fighters

PERFECT - SIMPLE PLAN
Hey dad look at me
Think back and talk to me
Did I grow up according to the plan?
And do you think I'm wasting my time doing things I wanna do?
But it hurts when you disapprove all along
And now I try hard to make it
I just want to make you proud
I'm never gonna be good enough for you
I can't pretend that
I'm alright
And you can't change me

'Cuz we lost it all
Nothing lasts forever
I'm sorry
I can't be perfect
Now it's just too late and
We can't go back
I'm sorry
I can't be perfect

I try not to think
About the pain I feel inside
Did you know you used to be my hero?
All the days you spent with me
Now seem so far away
And it feels like you don't care anymore

And now I try hard to make it
I just want to make you proud
I'm never gonna be good enough for you
I can't stand another fight
And nothing's alright

'Cuz we lost it all
Nothing lasts forever
I'm sorry
I can't be perfect
Now it's just too late and
We can't go back
I'm sorry
I can't be perfect

Nothing's gonna change the things that you said
Nothing's gonna make this right again
Please don't turn your back
I can't believe it's hard
Just to talk to you
But you don't understand

'Cuz we lost it all
Nothing lasts forever
I'm sorry
I can't be perfect
Now it's just too late and
We can't go back
I'm sorry
I can't be perfect

'Cuz we lost it all
Nothing lasts forever
I'm sorry
I can't be perfect
Now it's just too late and
We can't go back
I'm sorry
I can't be perfect

I love the verses in this song...

I think I'd have to go with What a wonderful world or Somewhere over the rainbow. Both have deep roots in me as my grandmother used to sing them when she was looking after me.

Then again, after I discovered the guitar maaaany years later and started to develop a liking towards the acoustic singer/songwriter style, I downloaded this video of Jason Mraz singing Rainbow Connection. Now, it may sound like I'm all about rainbows... but it's not my fault they make so good songs about them! 8)

"In This River" by Black Label Society. It's a softer song than what BLS is usually into. It's about the death of Dimebag Darrell, Zack Wylde's childhood friend. If you haven't heard it, go find it. If you have heard it, go watch the music video.

i have to say another song is "To Be Me" by American Headcharge, it's about everyone growing up around him and doing something with their lives, and how he is trying to salvage his life. the song is amazing, and i love the drums on it:

Have you any idea
What it's like to be me
Watching you succeed and move forward
All my wasted time, tensing in anticipation
My thought process
Full grown and worthless

Safe when nobody is in your heart now
Take everything you can get your hands on
Save me save me from this yearning yet again

I have become what I always knew
I have become what I always knew
Every salvageable breath choked off in fear
I am the last thing I'll ever expect from me

Safe when nobody is in your heart now
Take everything you can get your hands on
Save me save me from this yearning yet again

Have you any idea
What its like to be me

Got Metal?

good thread

i have many, favorites and most meaningful... but in the context of this forum i would have to say, 'father and son' by cat stevens...

i have recently made a decision to take up the guitar, which coincidentally occurred just about the same time as the birth of my son... this is one of the songs that i am currently trying to master...

i love the lyrics and i love the music... and of course, i love my son

Most meaningful song for is Metallica's "Bleeding Me." We got to play it at my best friend's memorial. Which was really surprising because we weren't allowed to display much of the things that made him who he was.

I also have Pink Floyd's "Hey You" and "Lost Carol/You're Not Here" on the Silent Hill 3 soundtrack. Odd find, being that its from a video game soundtrack, but a wonderful song. It reminds me of my best friend and an ex-girlfriend from long ago now.

"If I had a time machine, I'd go back and tell me to practise that bloody guitar!" -Vic Lewis

Everything is 42..... again.
