b). Gary Jules = Mad World
-It's a very sad song. Played at the end of one of the best blockbluster movie, Donnie Darko (2002: Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone and Drew Barrymore), It sings like it's telling the story about Donnie. It say's 'The dreams in which I'm dying, are the best i've ever had'. In the movie, Donnie was told the world was going to end. Near the end, when the end of the world comes, a worm hole appears and makes time go back, the night Donnie sleptwalked and was told the world was going to end. Donnie wakes up, before he was surpose to sleep walk, and start's laughing, thinking that the experience of the future, of the world going to end was a dream.

Dont wish to sound pedantic but Mad World was written in 1983 by A great and hugely underated (now at least) British group called Tears For Fears and although Gary Jules did a fantastic version of it he had no hand in the writing of the lyrics
The words were not about Donnie Darko although the "spookiness" of that version may make it seem so , the original was more "wacko" complete with a crazy dance on the video , well worth checking the original out.

One of my favourite lyrics is "Down In THe Tube Station" by Paul Weller of the Jam its more or less a complete British play in 3 minutes about a mugging , the very real threat of muggings on innocent people in the London Underground was a regular occorance when it was written check it out.
Another would be "Realise" by the flaming lips a very short song but very much to the point on how we all cannot or dare not accept that everyone we know someday will die etc etd Fantastic and moving rendition at Glastonbury festival 3 years ago possibly simular meaning to Pink Floyds Breath and as Wayne Coyne likes them it probably has more than a little connection so Breath is another of my favourites love the "Run Rabbit Run , Dig That Hole Forget the Sun and when at last the work is done dont sit down its time to build another one " bit life for most people in a sentance .

People will knock my next choice which is "excerpt from a teenage opera" by Kieth West otherwise known as Grocer Jack and is (once you take the time to dismiss the happy sounding music and sweet kiddies singing and listen to the words ) a deep song about a aging hard working man having a heart attack and dying as the villagers complain about him not delivering there grocerys etc etc .
'Grocer Jack', a sad tale of a bastion of the community who only seemed to have been appreciated posthumously.
"Opens windows in dispair , tries to breath in some fresh air " etc whilst the kiddies sing "Grocer Jack , Grocer Jack is it true what Mommy says you wont come back"
Briilliant and a great shame that the Rock Opera by him never saw the light of day , at least the excert/song got to number one though

Gets me every time now its very embarrassing !!!
It usually shocks most people when they finally read the lyrics to that one as the song then takes on a very different meaning.

Count the days into years
His eighty two brings many fears
Yesterday's laughter turned to tears
His arms and legs don't feel so strong
His heart is weak, there's something wrong
Opens windows in despair, tries to breathe in some fresh air
His conscience cries: "get on your feet
Without you, Jack, the town can't eat"

Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, get off your back
Go into town, don't let them down, oh no no
Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, get off your back
Go into town, don't let them down, oh no no

The people that live in the town don't understand
He's never been known to miss his round
"It's ten-o'clock", the housewives yell
"When Jack turns up we'll give him hell"
Husbands moan at breakfast tables
No milk, no eggs, no marmalade labels
Mothers send their children out
To Jack's house to scream and shout

Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, get off your back
Come into town, don't let us down, oh no no
Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, get off your back
Come into town, don't let us down, oh no no

It's Sunday morning bright and clear
Lovely flowers decorate a marvellous square
People cry and walk away and think about the fateful day
Now they wish they'd given Jack more affection and respect
The little children dressed in black
Don't know what happened to old Jack

Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, is it true what mummy says
You won't come back, oh no no
Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, is it true what mummy says
You won't come back, oh no no
Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, is it true what mummy says
You won't come back, oh no no
Grocer Jack, grocer Jack, is it true what mummy says
You won't come back, oh no no ....

Dont give a shite about punctuation or spelling , I have to do that all day at work.
Free times for rocking !!

Hey Jacqui, can you please remove, replace or resize your pic, it's skewing the page.

Most meaningful lyric? Richard Cory

Originally a poem by Edwin Arlington Robinson, it was made into a song by Simon and Garfunkel

They say that Richard Cory owns one half of this whole town,
With political connections to spread his wealth around.
Born into society, a banker's only child,
He had everything a man could want: power, grace, and style.

But I work in his factory
And I curse the life I'm living
And I curse my poverty
And I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be
Richard Cory.

The papers print his picture almost everywhere he goes:
Richard Cory at the opera, Richard Cory at a show.
And the rumor of his parties and the orgies on his yacht!
Oh, he surely must be happy with everything he's got.

But I work in his factory
And I curse the life I'm living
And I curse my poverty
And I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be
Richard Cory.

He freely gave to charity, he had the common touch,
And they were grateful for his patronage and thanked him very much,
So my mind was filled with wonder when the evening headlines read:
'Richard Cory went home last night and put a bullet through his head.'

But I work in his factory
And I curse the life I'm living
And I curse my poverty
And I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be,
Oh, I wish that I could be
Richard Cory.

"Eye in the Sky" Alan Parsons Project

Meaningful to me because it was my first favorite song. Remember listening to it when I was about 5 on a 45" over and over on my dome record player

Denkmal by Wir Sind Helden when the CD "Die Reklamation" came out.
It fit my situaton at the time and I still like it.
Sad that it was abused on radio stations (as nearly any other songs by them)

Denkmal

Komm mal ans Fenster komm her zu mir
Siehst du da drueben gleich da hinter dem Wellblechzaun
Da drueben auf dem Platz vor Aldi haben sie
Unser Abbild in Stein gehaun

Komm auf die Straße komm her zu mir
Ueberall Blumen und Girlanden halb zerknuellt
Sieht so aus als haetten die unser Denkmal heute nacht
Schon ohne uns enthuellt

Da steht in goldener Schrift
Wir sollen in Ewigkeit ruhen

Hol den Vorschlaghammer...

the song is musically rather easy, the lyric is rather easy written but very meaningfull and together a great combination.
Sooooo sad that they played it to death...

NO MORE THEORY!!
um...
KNOW MORE THEORY!!!!

hmmm this is a hard question[im new here by the way feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]] but anyways id have to say the most meaningful song to me at the moment is ''take it all away'' by ryan cabrera. the song is about how you will always be the same person inside no matter how long the material things last and you dont need them in life! the three things i value most are god,family/friends, and music!

Tough one. Recently probably Vermillion pt2 by slipknot. Even if you dont identify with the main body of the song by the time it gets to the bridge you will.

"Do you serve a purpose, or purposely serve?" Corey Taylor

hmmm...maybe not the most inspiring...but the most meaningful one to me has to be 'not now' by blink 182,its about a man who goes to see his lover whos in hospital..shes not doing so good but he actually realises hes already died and hes sat next to her on the bed..so she cant even see him..he didnt get a chance to say goodbye..i personally love blink 182,i know aa hell of a lot of ther songs are stupid and pointless but they do have a few hanging around which are well written.

my favourite verse...its a clever song

Please save,me this time I cannot run
And I'll see you when this is done
And now I have come to realize
That you are the one who's left behind

its weird how upsetting a song can actually be..

If you listen to the lyrics of Tool's "Schism" it is the story of the temple of babylon from the bible.

"Bring the pieces back to gether, rediscover comunication"

Maynard is a genious!

I dont know if anyone already metioned this, but you can't forget "Tears In Heaven" by Eric Clapton... I think this song is very moving because it was written after his sons death.

For me personally I would have to say:

How Can I Tell You by Cat Stevens which we played at my brothers funeral

and I love Behind Blue Eyes. I think it really catches male emotion, but hey I am a girl so what do I know?

It is self evident that the most meaningful song every penned must be the McCartney magnum opus that is "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da." Yes, life does indeed go on, bra, lala.

On a more serious note, I'm of the opinion that song meaning is almost a trivial function of the song itself, and much more dependent on personal experience (this gleaned from my lengthy 17 year existence, in which I've actively listened to songs for 3). For me, it's "For No One" by the Beatles, but there's not much of meaning to the lyrics.
Objectively, I'd have to go with Simon and Garfunkel's "The Boxer" or any one song from Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks (when heard along with the rest of the album, of course)

~Sam
