Motorcyclists have it really bad too. I have so much GAS both ways :)

If you can't put the cheapo down, why upgrade it? Leave it alone and play the heck out of that thing!
Amen, brother! As I say, cheap guitars are what it's all about!!! :D
Stairway to Freebird!
I say always start with the cheapest upgrades, they can make big difference!
1. Setup/fret leveling/nut
2. Electronics/Sheilding
3. Tuners/bridge
4. Pickups
About your GAS "Problem" I agree with what's been said above: don't let the fact that it has a funky name on the headstock keep you from getting full enjoyment out of it!
There are lots of times when something you weren't interested in ends up catching your fancy! In my case, I was planning on buying an HSS strat and keeping it for life, and ended up not enjoying it like I though and ended up a full time LP'er! Be open to the possibilities, and forget about your preconceptions.
Do something you love and you'll never work a day in your life...
I don't go beyond the setup stage on "upgrading" them. I enjoy cheap guitars for what they are.
