Forgot the most obvious and useful by the way: Transposing.

You have a song with chords C am dm F G7 and you can't sing along. OK, move it for instance one step clockwise C->G, am->em dm->am, F->C and G7->D7

Go counter-clockwise on the circle of fifths and you magically have the circle of fourths.
