finish crack or wood?

is there a good way to tell...mine is on a strat on the top of the heel (on the back of the guitar), on top of the neck bolt plate...it is 1/4 " long and fairly straight but doesn't seem to line up with any wood seams...could it just be a finish crack?...sorry no camera.
