System of a down use Mode 4 but they just don't have that good ol' distortion

I have been playing through a JCM2000 DSL 100 watt for about a year.I've had other Marshalls.I've heard he true difference is in the distortion section.The JCM 900 and I think the 800 and on back are considered to the purest to be a total tube amp. Tha newer models like my 2000 are supposed to use a zener diode for distortion.Does anyone have a fix for all of that threshold noise?Also should we be worried about all the heat and that funny smell?
