I'm hoping for Australia to win against Japan today because I'm actually half australian. My mum was born in Brisbane. I actually have a Australian soccer t-shirt that my uncle sent me last year.

I wish futbol (not to be confused with American football) or soccer as we call it in the USA had a bigger following in the US. I love to watch the game. Unfortunately the average American is used to seeing scoring and lots of it. Hence the rule changes in baseball and football and hockey (which used to be low scoring). There is also no time outs and no place to insert beer, car and Viagra commercials. No commmericals, no TV contract.

There is a league here but unless you go to the games and have the games near you, you don't get to see 'em.

Rahul: take context into account on the Cobain comment. Anyway, Japan never won nothing in football, I doubt they actually ever got passed the group stage before. But like many Asian nations they are rising quick and fast.

Hey Mike

Between ESPN and Fox Sports I usually get to see atleast two games a week of MLS. Went to a Dallas Burn (At the time they were the Burn) game once. It was awsome.

Congrats Australia. I only caught the ten last minutes because I had my guitar lesson, but I was lucky to see all Australias goals. That Guus Hidink (sp?) seem to be a great coach.

I think it would be great if they did, but I doubt it. But if they can beat Croatia (Assuming everything went their way) and advance that'd be good enough. I dont know anything about Croatia. Are they good?

Anyone else doing the Telegraph Fantasy World Cup? It's UK only I guess, but you never know...

I'm doing rather poorly at the mo - saving all my transfers for the run in and the really uneven matches :)

I haven't bothered with the World Cup one this time. I usually run the superleague at work but noone seemed interested in the World Cup Fantasy Football. It's not as much fun on your own.

I've had a lot of sobering thoughts in my time.

Rahul said "(Although i still think nobody can beat Aussies in cricket)"

Really? I must have dreamed the whole of last summer then - help, I'm metamorphosing into Bobby Ewing!

But to the football - I still think England and Sweden will qualify.... that game will be important, whever finishes second in the group will probably play Germany....

South American teams generally don't win the World Cup in Europe, and I honestly think - IF Sven gets his tactics right - England have as good a chance as anyone.....

But, as Jimmy Greaves used to say, "Football's a funny old game...."

And when it comes to putting money on at the bookies, I never let my heart rule my head - so I've had a little flutter on the Netherlands....they look well organised, and with Van Nistelrooy, Van Persie and Robben, they've got a fabulous attack......

And Hilch, don't get carried away, mate, in the unlikely event of the Aussies making it to the final, Harry Kewell will be off the field sometime in the first half with a groin strain...you'd have thought by now they'd learn to keep him away from Sheree the night before a big game....

Oh and for you despondent Americans, it's not over yet - there are still two games to go....

Enjoy the football!

:D :D :D
