Thanks for the clarification, Paul...I guess I wasn't sure what that meant (just hoping it didn't mean no GuitarNoise at all)...

I had actually planned a batch of lessons based on overlooked, yet great guitar solos. I'll probably nix that idea for now and stick with public domain or original material.

As a teen in the 70's. I would tape from the Radio or from my friends records all the songs I kinda liked.
Often as a result of this, I'd realize how much I liked a song, and would go out and buy it.
And I went to my favorite concerts.
Many artists made money off of me, many did not.
These sites are free PA for the artists and will result in more sales and more royalties........NOT LESS.

Seasons Greetings

All this fuss over tab sites but I haven't seen midi sites mentioned at all. And there are a few pieces of software out there that will covert a midi to tab. Wonder if that will be next?

Immature? Of course I'm immature Einstein, I'm 50 and in a Rock and ROll band.

Well everyone, I just hummed "Norwegian Wood" - to whom should I make the check payable?

What really burns me about this subject is that these artists that we are supporting would have given their left foot to have their work heard in the early years. In fact, many would have been downright giddy to have even seen a song they wrote tabbed on the Internet for all to review and learn. Funny how success changes the perspective.

I'll guarantee you that Metallica would have been tickled pink that people liked their music enough in 1983 to download it and put it on this crazy thing called a "computer" to listen to over and over again.

You don't see me buying any Metalagreed CD's  Or any major label CD's ( maybe a few, not nearly like I used to do). I have the feeling that most rock/pop stars could care less if someone puts a tab of one of there songs on the net, Its mostly the middle men, record companies, and lawyers who are going after the fans  --the dog

BTW, welcom to GN Dali Lima :D

I started to play the guitar approx 2 years ago during this time I have downloaded a few tabs off the net, in order to learn the songs i have purchased the original CD /Album.
Threfore the music industry has gained a few sales by this, if the tabs where not available free then I would have not been exposed to the music and the insdustry would have lost out!

Is there any artist that doesn't like someone covering their tunes? Any professional musician knows that even some guy playing your song around a campfire could lead to new fans and more sales. The digital landscape is changing things, and corporate type people whose overruling priority is increased profits are going to exploit anything that works in their favor.

I once read an interview with John Fogarty of CCR. In it, he attributed their succes to the fact that any bar band could play their music and make it sound good. Therefore, they were heard everywhere and everyone went out and bought the recordings. They sold a lot of records and sold out a lot of concerts before calling it quits. I know the guys I played with back then did a lot of their tunes. It would seem that the music industry would recognize that people utilizing tabs, in what ever form or fashion, digital or whatever, that this increased exposure would lead to increased sales, therefore more $$$ to the artist, labels and retailers. While I understand how downloading a recording is cheating someone out of a payday, I can't understand how you or I are cheating anyone by learning the song. Of all the tabs I have, the only ones I can play are the ones I have the recording to and many of those I made a special purchase just so I could learn it. Maybe I should charge them for advertising!

So, if I may add my two cents worth here, this is ridiculous. Will I be busted by my neighbor because he heard me singing in the shower and he knows I don't own the sheet music to the song? Or will the headlines read "Local Bar Band Arrested on Federal Charges" The local musical group "Houdini Weenies" were jailed last night and charged with "Singing somebody elses songs they didn't own the sheet music to." Federal agents have had the group under survelliance for the past month at their usual Friday and Saturday night gig at the "Dew Drop Inn" where they have been regular entertainment off and on for the past fifteen years. If convicted, the group could face years in jail and steep fines. Lead singer "Bubba" Jenkins had no comment only to say it was gonna be hard to pay that fine since he just got laid off his job from the chicken house and this was his only income. No one in town knew that the band was only a "cover" for criminal activity. Film at 11.

Actually, you might really owe somebody - you might want to look into it. Check out:

Thats scary  Every one should write and record there own music and put it on soundclick or hosting site of your choice, and register it with a Creative Commons copy-rite. ( It may catch on if this kind of thing continues)

The thing is, you're talking about three different people.

Assuming you're right, the record labels would benefit from free tabs. Their profits would go up.

The publishing companies would lose from free tabs. Why would you pay for something you can get for free?

The artists might win or lose - it depends on whether or not the increased royalties from CD sales and their share of royalties from people doing covers (from increased exposure) is more than their lost royalties from publishing.

But it's not the artists with the iffy economics, or the labels who would win who are pursuing tab sites - it's the publishers; they'll lose if all tabs can be had for no charge.

Put it in personal terms: you make $100,000 a year, and all your neighbors make $10,000 per year. If you agree to cut your salary to $1,000 per year, all your neighbors will suddenly make $50,000 per year. Are you willing to make the personal sacrifice for the greater good?

Now think about publishing companies - they'd being asked to do the same thing. Only the decision maker isn't making a choice for him/herself... most publishing companies are corporations, and the management is making a decision that affects the shareholders. If management voluntarily agrees to lower the shareholders' income, the shareholders will find new management.

That's why appeals to the publishing companies will have no effect. The MPA is going to keep it up unless a court says they have no standing (which isn't very likely)
