Hi Taso,

Here's another option. Make a mini rack (or a longer one for that matter). You can use dowels, as I did in one pic. Or commercial guitar hangers (similar to Smokindog's hangers) like in my second pic.

The advantages of using a piece of wood as a mount are as follows:

1. Once you think you've found the studs you can drill a hole or two and see if you were right (the wood will cover the holes afterwards).

2. You've got a bit of flexibilty as to where to put your hangers, because they screw into the wood not the stud.

3. It's stronger and safer because you're fixed to more than one stud. I put two screws in per stud.

Here's what the well hung guitarist does round here....

and

Cheers,

Chris

Really not a bad idea at all Chris. I like the look of just the guitar hanger more, but if that doesn't work, I'll be needing to do this wood job you've done. Thanks for sharing that, got a few options to explore, and I'll take a picture if/when it gets done...I mean, I had my guitar hanging there for quite a long time and I still didn't get around to putting up the posters...lazy college kids eh?

cosmo,

I think you'd know if you nailed it into a stud. If you can pull the nail out with your fingers then you probably didn't hit the stud.

You can try what jimh mentioned the anchors. They are usually a plastic type insert that you'd bang into the sheetrock and then screw into that, but I never had great luck with those except for the ones I used for concrete walls. But since yor only hanging a guitar they should be fine.

The butterfly type I described will require a slightly larger hole since the two wings have to fit through the sheetrock and then they open up behind it.

By the way I didn't know you were in Philly thought you were in NYC, where are you going to school?

Err, sorry Cnev, seems I ignored your question. I was actually in New York state, Long Island to be specific, not NYC - about a half hour drive from NYC. I've been in Philly since October, going to school at Drexel University (right in the center of the city basically) and studying Business. I am maintaining an incredible 2.2 GPA  and sleeping far too much.
