... according to British newspaper The Telegraph's music critics.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/arts/main.jhtml?xml=/arts/2004/11/20/bmcovercont20.xml#6

Normally when a list like this comes out it's just to raise the profile of the Newspaper or magazine, and this is no different. But at least this has a little synopsis beneath each song which makes for an enjoyable read.

"Sometimes you want to give up the guitar, you'll hate the guitar. But if you stick with it, you're gonna be rewarded." Jimi Hendrix.

One I think they missed:

Come On, Eileen - Save Ferris

Original - Dexy's Midnight Runners

I can't even listen to the original anymore...

If you're enjoying it, are you still a struggling artist??

I think that, although still just a page of albums certain people like, it's a good standard for internet countdown lists. Especially the fact that in this case they didn't just give a cover a spot on the list for sounding cool, but one's which brought the concept or emotional to a much clearer light.

Money? By the Flying Lizards? someone's taking the mickey....that record deserves a place in the re-cycle bin, if not hell....

Best Covers?

Joe Cocker - I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends (that's the all time great cover version...can't see that EVER being topped....)
Chris Farlowe - Out of Time
Santana - Black Magic Woman
Beatles - Twist and Shout
Status Quo - Rockin' All Over The World
Nazareth - Vigilante Man
Manfred Mann...If You Gotta Go, Go Now
Fairport Convention - If You Gotta Go, Go Now (but in French....Si vous voudrai partir.....)
Nazareth (again!) - This Flight Tonight
Dave Edmunds - Another Saturday Night
All Along The Watctower - U2 (The "Rattle and Hum" version")
Manfred Mann (again!) You Angel You
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Heard It Thru The Grapevine...
My Back Pages - the Byrds
Like A Rolling Stone - the Rolling Stones
And how about Dusty Springfield's version of "Goin' Back".....? The Byrds did a nice version, Carole King had her own version....but Dusty's was far and away the best....and we could use up a fair bit of bandwidth just talking about Dylan covers...and that's just the Byrds and Manfred Mann....

there's a few to be going on with......

:) :) :)

i love Springsten, but got to agree with tonedeaf.... Manfred Mann's version of "Blinded by the Light" is much better....and one I forgot to mention, ever heard Manfred Mann's Earth Band's version of "You Angel You"...the old Dylan song....

I remember hearing an excellent acoustic cover of Nirvana's, Heart-Shaped Box, by Evanescence.

Check out The Covers Project. at http://www.coversproject.com The site is presently under construction, and doesn't have a search function, like it used to. You can surf links tho', and come up with some interesting stuff.

I love covers when they put a new spin on an old favorite. Here are a few -

Lyle Lovett - Friend of the Devil
Indigo Girls - Uncle John's Band
Ramones - Time Is On My Side
Peter Wolf - Nothing But the Wheel
Mitch Ryder - Rock-n-Roll (really, most anything Mitch Ryder did)
CCR - Midnight Special
The Clash - Pressure Drop
Ryan Adams & Emmylou Harris - Return of the Grievous Angel
Cowboy Junkies - If You Gotta Go, Go Now
Springsteen - Jersey Girl
Shawn Colvin - Ol' 55
Rod Stewart - Only a Hobo
Joan Jett - Mary Tyler Moore theme
Elvis Costello - How Much I Lied
George Thorogood - Reelin' & Rockin'

I could go on and on. But, I have to respectfully disagree on the Blinded By the Light take. Manfred Mann's version misses so much of the libidinous innuendo that permeates Springsteen's version. Production wise it may be better, but it's missing the soul of the song. One man's opinion.

Blame it on the lies that killed us, blame it on the truth that ran us down.
