A Modern-day Romeo and Juliet.....
The Finnertys and Flahertys, have been daggers drawn for generations,
Since young Molly Finnerty, said no to Tom Flaherty at the church,
She wasn't really sure, but she plunged the families into all-out war,
But she knew what she was doing when she left him in the lurch,
The Finnertys and Flahertys, hate each other with a vengeance,
So alike, so different, feuding over imagined slights,
They came to England, differences were not forgotten,
The men glared at each other over many building sites...
And the bad blood festered and the bad blood rankled,
Generations heard the same old tales,
With a different slant from either side,
Hate your neighbour when all else fails.....
And the Finnertys settled in Newton-le-Willows,
And the Flahertys sailed in Leigh,
Only five miles away as the crow flies,
But worlds away from trying to agee.....
And then 200 years after the original incident,
Paul Finnerty fell in love with Marie,
His parents said well this can't go on,
You can't be seeing a Flaherty........
And the bad blood festered and the bad blood rankled,
Generations heard the same old tales,
With a different slant from either side,
Hate your neighbour when all else fails.....
But Paul and Marie had other ideas,
They were young and in love, and they didn't care,
And they set a date, and they bought the rings,
And the families had to pretend to care.....
And the families got together at the wedding,
And the differences were laid aside,
And both families toasted the groom,
And both families toasted the bride......
Much beer was consumed, old threats were forgotten,
The families got on like a house on fire,
Jigs and reels and "Whiskey In The Jar"
No-one called anyone a liar
And the Finnertys and Flahertys are now close friends,
And the invitations are manifold,
And the families are now ascloseasthis,
And the sons and daughter's don't need to be told,
That the bad blood festered and the bad blood rankled,
Generations heard the same old tales,
With a different slant from either side,
Hate your neighbour when all else fails.....
Now the bad blood's ended, the vendeta's mended,
And the families are as close as you get,
And Paul and Marie, as happy as can be,
A modern day, Romeo and Juliet.....

This is kind of based on my family, two lots of Irish antecedents, two families at war for years until a certain wedding,,,,pity I didn't have room for the fight scenes.....

Hey Vic
Good to see the arm is better , when I first open this I thought ..
Vic what have you written here ( War and Peace ?)
But after reading it ( a couple of times ) there is real easy flow to each line and the story just unfolds as one reads more and more then a little tune jumped into my demented head on second read
( like slow finger picking ) then it became more like strumming in the middle section , then back to finger picking at the end .
( sorry for interupretation of your song )
Then I thought to myself I wonder what has Vic in mind musically for this ? it would be a too hard of a task for this little duck .
Good writting Vic <-----( hope the arm keeps improving )
Hilch :?:
Here is to you as good as you are
And here is to me as bad as I am
As good as you are and as bad as I am
I'm as good as you are as bad as I am
Hey Old boy
Nice writting here mate , one concern for me is the amount of lines that begin with " And "......
Towards the end of the song ...So I thought I would have a read of it " and " leave that word out ...
Bugger me ... then the word " the " pops up everywhere
Oh well back to the dreaded cave for me then
Mother where is my Prosac ???
Aghhhh
Not only am I a senior citizen
I'm now a bloody senior member
Are you people trying to tell me I'm old or what ?
over 700 posts ( I really do need to get out more )
Hey Vic,
I enjoyed that, thanks. I must admit I thought whatthefeksthisword, when I saw, ascloseasthis. But the internet is a great thing, did you know the the Mutton Birds released a song of the same name in 1999 (just a bit trivia there).
good stuff
cheers
Paul

John
Vic, I can just here this coming out of our local Irish pub. I think you and the Celt could do a good job on this one!
Falling in love is like learning to play the guitar; first you learn to follow the rules, then you learn to play with your heart.
