I've thought about moving
I've thought about leaving
I know it's the thing to do
I've every reason to go
But i'm staying here and I want you to know
It's not because of you.
I'm not the sentimental type
And I know when something's not right
But I've go the house the way I like
With the cabinets painted white
So I'm staying here for now and
just so you'll know. It's not because of you.
Dont' think I can't go if I so desire
I've got plans to go higher
I've got places to go and people to see
My friends elsewhere are waiting for me.
But i'm staying here now,and I want you to know
It's not because of you.
It's the tree in the yard with the flowers all around
And my small business that I finally got off the ground
The pool out back where the kids all play
The china we got on our wedding day
I'm staying here now I want you to know
I'ts not because of you.
Hi Pearl - good to see you back at the writing again. Only one small quibble with this song - although I get the gist of it easily enough, it seems as if you're contradicting yourself....for instance, you start with
"I've thought about moving
I've thought about leaving
I know it's the thing to do
I've every reason to go"
and finish with
"It's the tree in the yard with the flowers all around
And my small business that I finally got off the ground
The pool out back where the kids all play
The china we got on our wedding day"
sounds like a lot of good reasons to stay....
"I'm not the sentimental type" - this clashes with the "china we got on our wedding day" which would suggest that the narrator IS the sentimental type.....
I could be totally off, and you've done this to appear confused, as if you're on the horns of a dilemma. I do like the overall feel - I can see this as a slow ballad, maybe fingerpicked? Also, I get the feeling you've been deliberately vague about the person the song's aimed at - that gives the song a kind of vulnerability, a kind of vague wistful yearning that hints at unfulfilled ambitions...sort of a double edged sword. Everything's all right, and yet....they say the grass is greener on the other side, don't they!

Nice Song Pearl,
I can't think of any thing I'd change.
Small typo in verse 2
But I've go the house the way I like
I believe you meant
But I've got the house the way I like
Good Job

Vik:
maybe i wasn't clear? The person wants to go, thinks they should go, but won't, or can't, because they think of all the reasons to stay. So they talk themselves out of it. Maybe i should list the reasons to go as well as the reasons to stay?
Celt: Thanks....
Maybe i should list the reasons to go as well as the reasons to stay?
Ah, but if you/the narrator did that, you/the narrator would probably leave! Actually, on second read, it seems a little clearer - but there's still the sentimentality issue to address....are you/is the narrator the sentimental type or not? You say not, but the wedding china etc. would seem to contradict that....
Oh yeah - and there's no "k" in Vic - it's short for Victor. Although, like Vick's Sinex or Vaporrub, I've been known to get up people's noses from time to time.....

The contradictory ways of Pearls song immediately reminded me of 10CC's 'I'm Not in Love':
I keep your picture upon the wall
It hides a nasty stain that's lyin' there
So don't you ask me to give it back
I know you know it doesn't mean that much to me
I'm not in love, no-no
(It's because...)
So, it made perfect sense to me
Just my 2 pence....
