This is cheating a bit since it's an old song of mine. But since it's set in a restaurant, I figured I can at least post something for a change instead of merely working. I promise, though. that I will try to write something new later this week.

In terms of a chord progression, this song actually sounds a bit like the old Jackie Wilson song Higher and Higher - D to G to Em7 to D over and over again with the exception of a ringing A at the end of the fifth line of the chorus.

By the bye, you should hear Nick sing back-up on this!

Rosie

Rosie works the breakfast shift at Harry's Bar and Grill
She's been working there since fifty-seven and probably always will
Some folks order only coffee she knows them all by name
If they're working if they're stiffers if they're sleeping if they're game

Carol's on at two o'clock 'though dinner starts at four
And she brings Rose a list of things to pick up at the store
She says to Harry "This one likes me...anyone can see"
She says to Rose "Ma I've got plans...don't you go waiting up for me"

And oh oh
Oh oh
Isn't it a shame
That nothing ever changes
But the faces and the names
And all the children keep having children
All the children keep having children
Yes all the children keep having children
All the children keep having children

Debbie's got two mothers so how can her life be bad
In the morning Carol tells her that her eyes are like her Dad's
And after lunch she goes to sleep but only for a while
And when she wakes up Rose is there with supper and a smile

And oh oh
Oh oh
Isn't it a shame
That nothing ever changes
But the faces and the names
And all the children keep having children
All the children keep having children
Yes all the children keep having children
All the children keep having children

Peace

Nice one.

It has a "sort of familiar" feel to it, and I can almost see the diner now.

Come on Rosie, love, what do you mean, "You don't do Tea?"

Great song David........love it - nice ambiguous ending.........

nice song, very atmospheric.

only query is the 'And all the children keep having children' lines,
surely in itself this is a good thing?

maybe its comes across differently when sung, but heres how i respond to the chorus as i read it:

'And oh oh
Oh oh
Isn't it a shame
That nothing ever changes
But the faces and the names'
- got u up to here, yes it is a shame, i'm in melancholy mood and feeling a little selfsatisfied because i've had to do a little thinking but nothing too strenuous to get the significance of the lines.

but then i start reading about the children having children, with the melancholy 'isn't it a shame' feeling still running around my head, so the tone and the words dont seem to match up.

it might be worth just reconsidering whether you are really communicating exactly the sentiment u want, or perhaps stick a bit of break in between the first and 2nd part of the chorus to divorce them a bit.

rob :)
