Well, well.... This is where I came in. Last year, the first song I posted for SSG was for the assignment to write a song based on a picture. And last year, it was based on the painting "Nighthawks" by Edward Hopper. But it got lost in the doin's. Anyways, I tried this week to do one based on "Belvedere" by M.C. Escher, one of my favorite artises, but no luck. So, in a complete 180 degree turn, I chose another favorite of mine, Dogs Playing Poker.
Dogs Playing Poker
==================
[v1]
Fido has a couple pairs
Jacks and Aces high.
Spot sits on a full house,
but he's making his eyes lie.
Woofy has a couple deuces,
and a suicidal king,
and that Ace tucked in his paw
won't mean a thing.
[chorus]
They're dogs playing poker,
tell me who'd have thought,
that man's best friend,
could be so well taught?
I can never quite recall myself,
if a full house beats a straight.
The canines hit the card rooms,
when you forget to close the gate.
[v2]
Ol' Blue brought the Milkbones,
Scruffy brought the beer.
No one knows the bulldog,
or how he showed up here.
Sometimes during the daytime,
they get into a fight.
But around the table,
there's more bark than bite.
[chorus]
They're dogs playing poker,
tell me who'd have thought,
that man's best friend,
could be so well taught?
I can never quite recall myself,
if a full house beats a straight.
The canines hit the card rooms,
when you forget to close the gate.

hey scratch,
great job. that was wonderful. better than i could have done. i was actaully thinking about using that picture while i was driving home after work.
"I can never quite recall myself,
if a full house beats a straight"
"No one knows the bulldog,
or how he showed up here. "
it is lines that those and a few others that really set this apart and make it really good. you don't just stick to the obvious imagery. this song is really fun and has a great flow.
wonderful job.

I've got to agree - great lyric.
Loads of fun without ever trying too hard to be funny. Just perfect, really.
Well done.

Listen Louder Than You Play
hey ya
good fun;) I like the lines cheap thrill mentioned and also the ones here:
Spot sits on a full house,
but he's making his eyes lie.
works great as a double meaning thing ... a dog sitting on a house trying to look like there's nothing different from normal...lol

I grew up near hillbillies.
Fido, Spot, and Blue are pretty stereotypical dog names. (although, I've never known a dog named Fido, they're in all the cartoons.) Scruffy and Woofy just seemed plausible enough.
My dogs names would never have worked. (Kelly, Penny, Tric, BD, Anyways, Hamilton)
Anyways, glad you liked it.

one of your dogs is named Anyways? how cool is that
going through the park screaming for him/her like mad..."Anyways, where are you?!" "Anyways!" ...cute:)

Was. Don't have her anymore. But I thought it was a cool name too. Everyone thought it was just plain weird. But it was a good name for her. "Anyways, come eat", "Get down, Anyways", "Fetch Anyways". ... I miss her.
dang, bluenightangel. made me all misty and I'm supposed to be workin'!

I'm sorry. *hug*

...miss my Tini, too...my dear guinea pig(although she didn't have a name quite as cool, I was too young when I named her...but well...she was so sweet)

I once had a great dane called " voetsak" which means "go away" in Afrikaans - the language here, it was great when trespasses came by, he would run at them thinking he was being called and they would be runninig away screaming

Zero dogs now. And yeah, I had six, but one at a time. ( I grew up near hillbillies, not with them. ) And you couldn't beat a one of them for friends (the dogs, that is.).

Hi Scratch
I read this earlier in the week whilst at work and was all set to comment when i got called away (usual story). Since then it's been praised a storm by everyone else and I wholeheartedly agree.
I think it's excellent.

When I read your lyrics a melody came to mind, it is based off of "100 bottles of beer on the wall" with groove. I like what you did, it reads and "sounds" cool.
