Empty Promises and Empty Threats

You keep saying you’ll do better
I say no way, not again, no never
You say you love me, I’m all you have
I say you lie, like you always have
But you always come back with the final word
And I’m always here, it’s so absurd.

Chorus
Empty promises and empty threats
You make your move but hedge your bets
My head says no, but the heart forgets
Just empty promises and empty threats.

I’ve been up all night, just can’t sleep
Remembering how your words cut so deep
Wondering where I ever went so wrong
But truth be told I’ve known it all along
The more I give the more you need
You tear me up and watch me bleed

Chorus
Empty promises and empty threats
You make your move but hedge your bets
My head says no, but the heart forgets
Just empty promises and empty threats.

It’s not that I had never learned
That karma given is karma earned
Trust that’s broken is trust destroyed
And it kills the love that we enjoyed
And leaves in its place tears and regrets
With empty promises and empty threats.

Chorus
**********************************************************************
Edited Version:
You keep saying you’ll do better
I say no way, not again, no never
You say you love me, I keep you sane
It’s just a lie, it’s a cruel game
But you always have the final word
And I’m always here, it’s so absurd.

Chorus:
Empty promises and empty threats
You make your move but hedge your bets
My head says no, but the heart forgets
Just empty promises and empty threats

I’ve been up all night, just can’t sleep
Thinking about how your words and how they cut so deep
Wonder where I ever went so wrong
But truth be told I’ve known it all along
The more I give the more you need
You tear me up just to watch me bleed

Bridge:
You’re falling, falling down into
A place where no one can get close to you
Your sadness clings just like a vine
And wraps all around your heart and mine

It’s not that I had never learned
That karma given is karma earned
Trust that’s broken is trust destroyed
And it kills the love that we enjoyed
And leaves in its place tears and regrets
And empty promises and empty threats.

Falling in love is like learning to play the guitar; first you learn to follow the rules, then you learn to play with your heart.

Hi Kathy,

Good lines and rhymes.

Suggestion: Switch verse 2 and 1.....it will get the listener in the story quicker and then they can focus on the music.

Thanks for sharing.

James

It reads well. Good use of meter and rhyme. I imagine it would work with a variety of chord structures and melodies. I''m looking forward to hearing it,

Thank you for the comments and suggestions. You are absolutely right James, it reads much better with the verses reversed. I've made the correction. Hoping to work on some music today. Maybe when I can't bear to look for jobs online a minute longer!

The song is up on my soundclick page. See link below.

Hi Kathy,

loved it :D . I think the final mp3 version is just great because of the way you polished those lines, especially this one
That karma spent is karma earned

fantastic,

cheers

Paul

Hi Kathy,

Sounding good; especially on the verses and nice delivery on the singing and playing both :D

Suggestion: The chorus sounds too "happy" for the lyrics, but a slight shift in chord progression could give it a bit harder edge and angst.

Right now you have this for the chorus:

B G#m E F#

try starting on that second chord like this for the chorus:

G#m E F# B

Thanks for mp3. It adds a lot :D
