Hi guys

Here's my BH tribute song....

I suppose played bluegrass, rockabilly, 60s rock and roll sorta style....simple chords (as usual)

Interesting that we've just written songs about capn' Sully who was flying from LaGuardia, according to good ole wikipedia the story of the BH crash was displaced in the national news by an accident that occurred the same day in New York City, when American Airlines Flight 320 crashed during an instrument landing approach at LaGuardia Airport, killing 65.

Spookey eh?

Also, looking at all the rock 'stars' that died in light aircraft crashes, one has to see a moral in the story somewhere...

Never Fade Away

(G) I was only (C) just a kid I (E) didn't even know his (D) name
It was back in nineteen fifty nine when he climbed aboard a plane
A snowy night in Iowa a young pilot took the blame
The moment past, the music world would never be the same

Born on Labor Day young Charles was going to be a star
His head was full of music played on piano and guitar
They always called him Buddy who'd have thought he'd go so far
Playing bluegrass music and then singing in the choir

Chorus
(C) What would Buddy (D) be singing if he'd (G) still been here (C) today?
Would he still be writing beebop tunes that ended with (C) a-hey hey
Would rock and roll be different and what would the critics (E) say
(Am) He's gone, but still (C) within our hearts he'll (D) never fade (G) away

He got the heart for rock and roll when he first heard Presley sing
He played with stars like Hayley and in venues with with The King
Alone or withThe Crickets Buddy didn't miss a thing
And the words of That'll Be The Day was waiting in the wings

When Buddy met Maria it was said love at first sight
They married and she wished that she'd been with him on that night
A widow after just six months she would have stopped him take that flight
And the child that they both longed for never got to see the light

What would Buddy be singing if he'd still been here today?
Would he still be writing beebop tunes that ended with a-hey hey
Would rock and roll be different and what would the critics say
He's gone, but still within our hearts he'll never fade away

He was a king of rock and roll now he's sitting on his throne
His music it lived on through Dylan, Beatles and the Stones
And when you hear the old songs and your mind it starts to roam
Remember Buddy Holly and he'll soon be coming home

What would Buddy be singing if he'd still been here today?
Would he still be writing beebop tunes that ended with a-hey hey
Would rock and roll be different and what would the critics say
He's gone, but still within our hearts he'll never fade away
He's gone, but still within our hearts he'll never fade away

Thanks for reading.

Rock on!

Dylan,

It looks like you did your research you pretty much have the story all laid out.
I like the mention of Maria. I think she is overlooked as part of this tragic story.
Even Don McClain only gives her a brief mention in American Pie.(more on that when I finish my lyrics)

The only criticism is the word "beebop" It makes me think of Jazz and I
think Rock & Roll would be more appropriate. Or maybe it's just me?

Hey Dylan,

Good job! :D
I agree with John on your "research" coming through. Good use of details and facts to flesh out the lyrics. The rhymes are looking pretty good....next the listen (when you have the chance).

Nice job Dylan!

I like the story telling. I never really knew about any of the artists in the assignment so had to look up information myself, but after reading this, you can tell you did your research, chords seem to work well also, will there be an mp3?

Nice lyrics,

I like how you fit some song titles in there.

Nice work, Dylan.

One minor quibble with the first line of the chorus - can we do something to make it present tense like the rest of the lines in the chorus? Perhaps:

What would Buddy be singing if he if he were playing today?
Would he still be writing timeless tunes that ended with a-hey hey
Would rock and roll be different and what would the critics say
He's gone, but still within our hearts he'll never fade away

Looking forward to the MP3.

Peace

Hi guys

Thanks for all the comments.

I watched the Buddy Holly story on tv last night and I felt I knew the characters - really strange, and really sad sensation...

A couple of things, I know there's a problem with using the word BeeBop which I was cool about because when I done some more research it was more jazzy than rock and roll - I did think of using a few metaphores but wasn't really comfortable with it. In the film when he was playing with his band at the ice rink, the guy on the phone also referred to it as beebop, but I suppose that might just have been his ignorance at the music...?

Dave, thanks for your input. I see what you are saying but it still needs fine tuning. I'm not sure I like the first line where we say 'singing' and then 'playing' - I mean, I know he does both but it just sounds a bit odd.
I thought of 'timeless' but I think that's not strong enough and a bit general for my liking...

Not sure I'm going to be able to make an mp3 of this one either. Might have to wait until I return to my recording studios in the Bahamas, if Amy has finished with them...

Dylan, I googled 50's slang and came up with some pages. Sounds was slang for music. Maybe you could work that in or find something else at one of those sites.

Seems to me I remember my parents using the word beboppin' when I was a teen and going to the school sock hop but I'm not sure and that was the 70's. I also seem to remember the word bop used some on the TV show Happy Days and in some songs...."Be-Bop-A-Lula", or as background vocals in Elvis' version of "Don't Be Cruel".

Anyway, your lyrics are really cookin'. :D

Lonely cigarettes
Unlucky day
Away from home feeling
Without you the days to come
This girl deserves to love it?
And your point is?
