Rough draft, but this is what I have so far:

Christmas Prayer
================

Would've been
our first Christmas together.
Didn't know
I'd be so far away
I keep your picture
right inside my jacket.
Standing watch behind
a sandbagged barricade.

I don't need fancy presents
or glad tidings.
to remind me of the Savior's humble birth.
But if you don't mind,
I would ask you a favor,
take a moment, to pray for peace on earth.

Hello Ma,
I bet you're baking cookies.
stringing popcorn,
and berries on the tree.
I'd like to tell you
I'll be home for Christmas.
I guess this year
it wasn't meant to be.

I don't need fancy presents
or glad tidings.
to remind me of the Savior's humble birth.
But if you don't mind,
I would ask you a favor,
take a moment, to pray for peace on earth.

Folks at home,
I don't want you to worry.
I'm with a top notch crew
they've got my back.
When we get the word
we'll be home in a hurry.
Until then,
there's one thing we would ask.

We don't need fancy presents
or glad tidings.
to remind us of the Savior's humble birth.
But if you don't mind,
we'd like to ask a favor,
when you think of us,
just pray for peace on earth.

Scratch

Beautiful

It brought a tear to my eye

I like the way you include the other
troups at the end.

I pray for peace often and will remember
this song when I do

Happy Holidays and Peace on Earth

Nice job Scratch, sentimental without being sickly...reads like a postcard, sort of, just a few lines to the folks back home....

Celt pretty much said it all.....

And for a rough draft, I can't really suggest anywhere it needs tweaking....looks like the finished article to me!

:D :D :D

Scratch.
Yeah, I like it too
The only thing I would have done different is that I would have tried to rearrange
the chorus so that “Savior” and “Favor” would end the sentence.
something like:

I don't need fancy presents
to remind me of our Savior
I don't need glad tidings
to remember his humble birth.
But if you don't mind,
I would like to ask you a favor,
please take a moment,
to pray for peace on earth.

Not that it really matters, what you have is great, I'm just a sucker for rhyming…( my downfall sometimes)
BTW, did I read somewhere that you are in Maryland now? If so, welcome to the East Coast.

Blessings.

Well, I don't know if you read it somewhere or not, but I am. We're in Havre de Grace. I would say, "Not so far from you" but in truth, nowhere in Maryland is very far from anywhere else in Maryland.
Anyways, thanks for the welcome, I believe we're going to like it here. The kids are already digging the snow, (and the snow days).
Thanks for the suggestions too, I'll have another look at that chorus.
Take Care, neighbor.

I tend to not like Christmas music (even more after 7 hours on the road with it back and forth to Houston this year) but I like this one a lot scratch... nothing to add.
