Personally, I think you are better off with the Gibson SG than trying to hot rod an Epiphone. The SG Special is a great instrument at a good price. It is not top of the line, but neither is the Epi. I also must say that I am thoroughly amazed when people swap out the pickups in a Gibson. In my opinion Gibson humbuckers are about the best sounding pups made.

I've never played an SG, but I do own an Epi LP standard & for slide the muddy tone is fantastic.
