i find kurt cobain to be an excellent musician. his music is timeless, and really, their unplugged performance is just transcendant. maybe his technical chops werent the greatest, but he changed the face of rock in the 90s much like Hendrix did.

i wonder if Cobain would have been a better guitarist without the drugs, then i wonder if the music would have sucked when taking the drugs out. but still SAY NO TO DRUGS.

Angel,
The question was not "who is best", but "who is the most influential, which is a completely different bag of marbles. I was never very keen on Link Wray's "Rumble", but since his death, it's amazing the people who've come out and said that it "Rumble" that got them into playing guitar. He obviously had a great influence, if not a massively popular career.
What about Buddy Holly, the man who started everyone playing Strats?
Then there's Les Paul (who I'd never, ever put in the category "Rock&Roll"), the man who, perhaps more than anyone, made the guitar a solo instrument.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?

On a side note, I checked out some Led Zepplin, the guitar playing is good but doesn't do much for me.

OWA, 40-year olds everywhere are now complaining about "kids these days."

I'm 47 and Page never really did it for me either. I mean does the guy deserve credit for what he did? Sure, Was he one of the greats of British Guitar? Without a doubt. His playing just never grabbed me by the cajones the way Jeff Beck's or Peter Greene's or Keefs playing does.

Immature? Of course I'm immature Einstein, I'm 50 and in a Rock and ROll band.

I think debating on who is better is kinda silly. There is too much personal taste involved and different views.

On a side note, I checked out some Led Zepplin, the guitar playing is good but doesn't do much for me.

OWA, it is all about personal taste. At least you checked out Zeppelin, and made an informed decision. :D

Angel,
Les Paul (who I'd never, ever put in the category "Rock&Roll"), the man who, perhaps more than anyone, made the guitar a solo instrument.

I think that's more than debatable, Grebeard.

Les Paul, who deserves all the props in the world for what he did do, did far less for the guitar as a solo instrument than either Charlie Christian or Django. Django in this context gets a pass as he was strictly accoustic, but Charlie was playing electric.

Where Les really made his mark is in the recording studio, where he invented, well, everything!

I made the effort to read the title of the thread, which is why I made no mention of Robert Johnson, Son House, etc. Even though he was not a R&R guitarist, the instrument that he spawned, together with that of Leo Fender, who is disqualified, as he wasn't a guitarist, was arguably the man who made it happen in the electric world.
Django Reinhardt had little, if any influence, on electric rock guitar.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

Let's not forget that Chuck Berry was influenced by Marty McFly.

Gotta give some credit to Chucks cousin Marvin for making the phone call to Chuck while Marvins band was performing at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance.

I'll give a nod to Tesla. he discovered the magnetic coil. without that you would not have a single electric guitar great.

Cool. So we have a new list that should go something like this. ( feel free to add of take away)

Franklin - electricity
Edison - bulb
Graham - phone
Tesla - coil
Les Paul - put all the pieces together
