Hi everyone. Here is my first attempt at a song for this forum.
The subject was 'things that are specific to a certain place' so I thought I'd write a little song about the woods where I walk my dogs - and more specifically about kicking through the leaves in Autumn. I find there's something very timeless about doing that and so that is what this song is supposed to represent.
Hope you like it.

Kicking through leaves

I like kicking through leaves
Buttoned up, to keep out the breeze
And if you find me
Please don't remind me
There's work a-waiting at the office please
Because

I just need a place to go
To look at the clouds
And feel the rain and snow
To sit on an ancient stone
and think
You'll be there when I go.

I like to walk through the trees
And hear them whispering in the breeze
They sing a song
And I hum along
To keep them company
Because

I just need a place to go
To look at the clouds
And feel the rain and snow
To sit on an ancient stone
and think
You'll be there when I go.

First, welcome to GN.
Second, excellent first post.
Second and a half, good job on the lyrics.
Third, are we going to be able to hear you sing it?

It's the rock that gives the stream its music . . . and the stream that gives the rock its roll.

hey
a welcome from me, too.
looks like a good and singable song.
and, being a fool for trees and humming, I adore this part:
They sing a song
And I hum along
To keep them company
Because

it's brilliant!

hope to read more from you :D
cheers,
straycat.

Thanks for the generous comments guys.
I've been writing songs on and off for years but I like the idea of being disciplined about it and writing regularly to set themes.
I've got some basic recording gear on my p.c. but I've never used it much. I've certainly never thought about posting any of my singing or playing on-line but hey... if I can put my lyrics up here then why not.
Is there a recommended site that I could easily up-load mp3 recordings onto?

Hi Obscurejude,

I thought it was delightful. :D It seemed to sing itself, and had a lovely blend of child-like innocence and adult awareness that really appealed to me.

Soundclick used to be a popular upload site. Not sure what the latest candidates are.

Cheers,

Chris

Obscurejude,

Welcome to GN and SSG

Nice job on the lyrics. For some reason the "ancient stone" line really put it in perspective for me.

You mention walking your dogs in you post so why not
bring them into the song in the second verse
I like to walk through the trees
And hear them whispering in the breeze
They sing a song
And I hum along
To keep them company

Something Like
I like to walk through the trees
And hear them whispering in the breeze
They sing a song
And I hum along
Got my dogs to keep me company
Because

Just a thought

I think he's harmonizing with nature and the dogs came along to . . .
well, do what dogs do on a walk. . . in the woods. :D

Speaking of harmonizing . . .

I like to walk through the trees
And hear them whispering in the breeze
They sing a song
While I hum along
To add my own harmony

Because

Did they tell you all our suggestions are mandatory!?

It's the rock that gives the stream its music . . . and the stream that gives the rock its roll.

I always like to get my acoustic guitar and throw a few chords together - nothing fancy, just to get a sense of rhythm and timing. This one came with a bit of a struggle, which isn't a bad thing - I mean, I have no idea what sort of music you're thinking of putting to this, slow, fast, rock, ballad, heavy metal.....so I had to experiment.

I found I could get a nice rhythm together at a sort of rock/ballad tempo - was that what you were thinking? I also found it worked nicely as a Free/Paul Rodgers mid-tempo blues rocker - make of that what you will......

There aren't any stand-out lines in the lyrics, for me, but then again, there's nothing that makes me cringe or even think about changing a word or two, so I suppose that's a pretty good start....look forward to reading, and possibly hearing, more.

:D :D :D

Hi Obscurejude, welcome to the forum.
I often find that it is just simple things that happen in life that make great subjects for songs. Like this one. I think this song has some great potential if you were inclined to expand on it. For example

To sit on an ancient stone
and think
You'll be there when I go.

The stone will still be there when you go but maybe something else will also be there, like a particular emotion that you have when you sit on that stone. If this was my song this is the direction I would take it. Anyway just my thoughts, I think you've done some good work here

Cheers
Paul

Wow! What a great first time submission!

I could see this shaping into something very (Leslie) Feist-like.
