Hi all,

Just time for a quickie this week. No mp3 at present, but you shouldn't need one. Irish Traditional style. Pub song feel.

Bloody Hell! Is That The Time Already?"

VERSE 1:

(G) Oh I used to be king of the (C) hill, lads
(G) Always careless and fancy (D7) free
(G) Ride it or drive it, drink it or (Em) smoke..
There was (Am) nobody (D7)madder than (G) me

(G) Life was for living, (C) girls were for loving
(G) Sing it as loud as you (D) can
(G) But somewhere between then and (Em) now, lads
The (Am) clock turned me (D7) into a (G) man

CHORUS:

Oh, the sun shone out of my arse, lads
It was truly a glorious sight
Whenever I took off my trousers
The room would be flooded with light

So great was my rectal illuminance
I could brighten the darkest night
And if anyone said I was handsome
I'd always agree they were right

VERSE 2:

But time can alter your view, lads
And the mirror it tells you no lie
The years have taken their toll, boys
The difference could make a man cry…

Now when I shave in the morning
The face that I see in the glass
Looks more like Keith Richard's Grandad
With every new day that goes past…

CHORUS:

Oh, the sun shone out of my arse, lads
It was truly a glorious sight
Whenever I took off my trousers
The room would be flooded with light

2nd half of chorus INSTRUMENTAL

VERSE 3:

My Mum always said I was smart lads
And I'm not going to say she was wrong
But the man who was top of his class, boys
Can't remember the words to this song

I.. um.. hang on I'm sure they'll come back
I knew them this morning by heart
I'm not admitting I'm totally senile
Just beginning to fall.. apart…

CHORUS:

Oh, the sun shone out of my arse, lads
It was truly a glorious sight
Whenever I took off my trousers
The room would be flooded with light

Yet my life has not all been sunshine
Even when I was having a ball
But good times and bad they all have a place
And I don't regret it at all…

… no, I don't regret it at all…

The 'Then' part is not as autobiographical as I might like to pretend, but the 'Now' sections are fairly accurate...
I expect that the older and more experienced among you might have noticed that it's a direct steal of the traditional old song "Black Velvet Band", but with new words. So just put on your best Irish accent and sing Black Velvet Band with the new words above. I'm pleading a busy week...

Cheers,

Chris

I've not heard "Black Velvet Band" but this is great. Got my laugh for the day.
Thanks, Chris!

All my life I wanted to be somebody. Now I see I should have been more specific.

Fantastic! I Love it. I want to sing it!!!

Falling in love is like learning to play the guitar; first you learn to follow the rules, then you learn to play with your heart.

The third verse, especially the last half of it, is a treasure, Chris. Very cool. I know some folks around here that will probably play it for Saint Patrick's Day...

Although I should probably be giving you all sorts of grief because this has got "earworm" all over it!

Peace

Very funny, very clever! OK, you nicked the music, but we'll turn a blind eye to that - and besides, with a song like this, which is more about a driving rhythm to push it along, it shouldn't be too hard to come up with a few different chords, given time.

I think you've cornered the market in humorous ditties, Chris - you've definitely kissed the blarney stone when it comes to that particular genre!

:D :D :D

That is just too funny.

So great was my rectal illuminance
I could brighten the darkest night
And if anyone said I was handsome
I'd always agree they were right

One suggestion: Change the word handsome to brilliant - as in illuminated (to me it would be punnier)

Well, one other suggestion: Throw a copyright line somewhere in that post.
It is way too good not to. (and I might steal it)

It's the rock that gives the stream its music . . . and the stream that gives the rock its roll.

Thanks to you all for the very kind comments. I'm chuffed that it raised a few laughs :)

Although I should probably be giving you all sorts of grief because this has got "earworm" all over it!

One of the first bits of song that impressed me as a kid was the chorus to Black Vevet Band:

Oh her eyes they shone like diamonds
You'd think she was queen of the land
And her hair hung over her shoulders
Tied up with a black velvet band.

Quite apart from developing a crush on the imaginary girl, it stuck firmly in my head for the next 50 years! So an earworm indeed. Maybe I'm trying to infect the rest of you.....

I think the best version that I've heard of the 3rd verse theme of getting old and forgetful is this one by Tom Rush. Great song that cracks me up everytime, especially the ending.

Remember Song by Tom Rush

One suggestion: Change the word handsome to brilliant - as in illuminated (to me it would be punnier)

Thanks for the kind comments Ken, and the suggestion. :) Although I understand what you're saying, the word "handsome" was put there deliberately because it sets up the next verse where the singer looks in the mirror and sees the opposite of handsome. That wouldn't work as well without the setup first. It's also part of the whole idea of a reckless and somewhat self absorbed and vain young man getting his come-uppance as the years catch up with him, and then looking back and laughing at himself. At least that was the general idea, so I'll probably leave it in. I wasn't actually reckless or showy as a boy myself (or handsome either for that matter...) so it's all a bit of fantasizing or retrospective vanity perhaps.....

Cheers,

Chris

On the topic of funny lyrics,
I was sent this video by a friend and it reminded me of Chris's song
So time to share . . . .
