A Day At The Beach

There was sand everywhere from that day on the beach,
Cleaning it up took us hours and hours,
It was in our hair, it was in our clothes,
But didn't we have some fun in the shower......

Remember that kid with the dog and the frisbee,
The dog was afraid to go near the water,
And the man we sat near, been widowed six months,
First time he'd been out since with his little daughter,

She was laughing and giggling like a genie released,
Out of the bottle, back into the world,
Eating fried chicken, choc-chip ice cream,
You never saw such a happy girl.......

A day at the beach, everything's all right,
The water's never too cold, the sun's never too bright,
A day at the beach, everythings okay,
And stays that way, for many a day........

Remember those kids in the tidal rock pool,
Catching tiny crabs in a net,
And taking 'em back for the parents to see,
Don't think the mother's stopped screaming yet........!

Remember dragging me to see, Punch and Judy,
"Come on," I laughed, "that stuff's old hat,
But you made me watch, albeit reluctantly,
And I have to admit, I really enjoyed that....

A day at the beach, everything's all right,
The water's never too cold, the sun's never too bright,
A day at the beach, everythings okay,
And stays that way, for many a day........

Then the radio roadshow, pitched up and started,
They played all our favourite songs,
We were dizzy from dancing, giddy from laughing,
And hoarse as crows from singing along......

Tomorrow it's exactly fifty years to the day,
Since we spent that day on the sand,
First day of our honeymoon,
Fifty years of your love, ain't life grand.......

A day at the beach, everything's all right,
The water's never too cold, the sun's never too bright,
A day at the beach, everythings okay,
And stays that way, for many a day........

That day at the beach, I'll never forget it,
Maybe tomorrow, I'll dust off the deckchairs,
Maybe tomorow, we'll take a train ride,
Maybe tomorrow, we'll go back there......

A day at the beach'll do a power of good,
Though the water's cold and a little too wet,
For these old bones, but that doesn't matter,
As we stroll hand-in-hand into the sunset........
-----------------------------------------------------------------

An unashamed wallow in nostalgia if you like, thinking of all the happy days out I had when I was a kid - this is a composite of all those days.....

But I tried to write it from the point of view of an old man looking back, and just for once I thought I'd throw a happy ending in.....

hey vic,

great, great song. i really liked it, it put such a big smile on my face. But didn't we have some fun in the shower...... this line just love it, very fun.

i like the fact that it is an old man looking back a the good times. i really felt like i was there at the beach, having fun. i also like that you described such a variety of different aspects of the beach. that made the song more fun.

the only thing bad i have to say is that the ending made me cry. only for a moment. i don't know what it is, but happy endings really get to me. i was a wreck that week when happy endings was the assignment. i think every song that week made me sad. maybe i am just a little backwards. :)

nice to see a hppy fun song this week.

Great song Vic,
Lots of great scenes, can picture many of them, though have quite had 50 years worth of experiences at the beach :P you might be showing your age ;)
Also good to see a nice positive song! Great ending too, fit perfectly.

cheers

I meant to mention, a week before my grandad died, me and my mum took him and my grandma to Blackpool for a day.......we had a couple of beers, we ate fish and chips out of newspapers, we walked on the beach.... grandad and grandma just about made it to the golden anniversary, six months later they were both dead......this was written with them in mind, they were so much in love after all that time.....my grandad died first, I think my grandma just pined away - that kind of love is something special..........but god bless 'em, they were the best grandparents you could wish for........

And yes, I do still miss 'em, after all these years.......28 years and I can still picture their faces in my minds eye..........I will never, ever, EVER forget them..........

Vic. You've done what no other song on this forum has ever done to me. You made me tear up. that was UNBELIEVABLE. The sentimentality in there is so wonderful. Thank you so much for that bit of writing.

Amazing.

Bravo.

Hi Vic

that's a sweet one, I'm sure your grandparents must have been really great.

some parts made me a bit sad...for example the chorus, the following part
Tomorrow it's exactly fifty years to the day,
Since we spent that day on the sand,
First day of our honeymoon,
Fifty years of your love, ain't life grand....... and the one where you think about going back someday...

these lines are standing out for me:
Though the water's cold and a little too wet,
For these old bones, but that doesn't matter,
As we stroll hand-in-hand into the sunset........
adore them...'terrific' as scratch would say...

thanks

...'terrific' as scratch would say...
Do I say that a lot? hmmm.... sometimes I run out of superlatives and have to recycle. Oh well.

Vic,

It took me a long time to get around to liking this one. Several reads. Something in my brain is obviously worn out, because everyone showered such accolades on it from the start. Heck, you even made Marv go all weepy.

Anyways, I've re-read it now several times, and it's beginning to shape up in my worn-out mind. I hear it with a kind of mellow James Taylor feel to it. Really nice. The chorus is priceless. At least I was able to recognize that from the start!

So, even though it took me so long to respond to it, just wanted to say now that it's taken form for me, it's a really wonderful, dare I say.... terrific piece of writing. Well done.
